All-MLB Team nominees announced
It’s once again time for fans to help decide which players are worthy of being named to the All-MLB Team.
Unlike the Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Awards, which are awarded to one player in both the American League and National League, the All-MLB Team recognizes the best player(s) at each position across the Majors, as a whole.
Nominees were announced on Thursday for the 2022 All-MLB Team, which -- as in each of the past three years -- will be split into a First and Second Team. Fans can vote once every 24 hours between now and 5 p.m. ET on Nov. 22, with 50% of the vote coming from fans and 50% coming from a panel of experts. Winners will be announced on MLB Network at 8 p.m. ET on Dec. 5.
Voters are asked to consider only performance during the regular season when casting their ballots. Each team will include one selection at catcher, first base, second base, shortstop, third base and DH, as well as three outfielders (regardless of specific outfield position), five starting pitchers and two relievers.
Fans will have their hands full as they try to whittle down a list of candidates that includes 71 position players (10 catchers, nine first basemen, eight second basemen, 10 shortstops, nine third basemen, five designated hitters and 20 outfielders) and 45 pitchers (23 starters and 22 relievers).
The Braves led the way with 11 nominees, including at least one player at every position except second base and DH. Those candidates are catchers William Contreras and Travis d’Arnaud; first baseman Matt Olson; shortstop Dansby Swanson; third baseman Austin Riley; outfielder Michael Harris II; starting pitchers Max Fried, Spencer Strider and Kyle Wright; and relievers Kenley Jansen and A.J. Minter.
The Astros, meanwhile, paced all AL clubs with nine nominees, including a trio of starting pitchers (Justin Verlander, Framber Valdez and Cristian Javier). Houston’s other six nominees are designated hitter Yordan Alvarez, second baseman Jose Altuve, third baseman Alex Bregman, shortstop Jeremy Peña, outfielder Kyle Tucker and reliever Ryan Pressly.
