Águilas sweeps inaugural Titans of Caribbean series
NEW YORK -- With a 9-6 victory on Sunday afternoon, the Águilas Cibaeñas completed a sweep of the Tigres del Licey to hoist the trophy in the inaugural “Titans of the Caribbean” series at Citi Field.
The story over the first two games of the exhibition series between the Dominican baseball rivals was the Águilas' pitching staff, which limited Licey to just one hit in each of the contests and won both by scores of 3-0. In the second game, seven Águilas pitchers combined to strike out 14 batters and came within two outs of a no-hitter; the bid ended with a single into shallow right field by Blue Jays No. 2 prospect and Tigres third baseman Orelvis Martínez.
The third game saw an offensive outburst from the early going, with the Águilas scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. The only home run of the series came off the bat of Águilas catcher Carlos Paulino, a 378-foot solo shot to left field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh on Sunday.
Colorado Rockies infielder Elehuris Montero started each of the three games for the Águilas at first base and went 3-for-8 (.375) with an RBI and two walks.
Despite game-time temperatures in the 40s and 50s Fahrenheit, Dominican fans in the Big Apple turned out in droves to support their teams. The total attendance for the three-game set was 90,900, with Sunday's 32,536 figure representing the highest attendance ever for a game between two Dominican League (LIDOM) teams. And the fans not only showed up but made plenty of noise, waving flags, playing instruments, and dancing and singing in the stands throughout the weekend.
“It's really impressive. It's an example of how Dominican fans make their presence felt,” said Águilas manager Tony Peña, who took over the team last Monday. “All those fans who came today, and who came out these three days to enjoy this event, should be applauded. They made us feel good. ... They made us feel like we were playing in the Dominican Republic.”
Among the former Dominican Major Leaguers at Citi Field over the weekend were Hall of Famers David Ortiz and Pedro Martínez; recently retired slugger Nelson Cruz, who was honored before the second game; and former Mets shortstop José Reyes.
“A great opportunity for all Dominicans to feel the warmth that our baseball, our people offer,” said Martínez, who caught the ceremonial first pitch from New York City Mayor Eric Adams prior to the third game of the series.
In a press conference Sunday, LIDOM president Vitelio Mejía Ortiz said he was pleased with the response to the inaugural event and revealed that the league has already begun looking ahead to a second installment of the series in 2024. On the agenda is evaluating the possibility of having the games count towards the official results of the LIDOM championship season.
The Tigres and the Águilas will face each other again on Tuesday at Estadio Cibao in the Dominican, where the last-place Águilas will try to use the momentum from the series in New York to break a streak of eight consecutive losses. All LIDOM regular-season and postseason games can be streamed live on MLB.TV with the Postseason Package.
