Engel avoids arb, signs 1-yr. deal with Sox
CHICAGO -- Adam Engel and the White Sox avoided arbitration by agreeing to terms on a one-year, $1.375 million deal, as announced by the team on Wednesday.
Engel, 29, has been with the White Sox since being selected out of Louisville in the 19th round of the 2013 Draft, and he had his first playoff experience in '20. The right-handed-hitting outfielder and Gold Glove-caliber defender finished 3-for-12 with one home run in the three-game American League Wild Card Series loss to the A’s.
During his fourth big league season with the White Sox in 2020, Engel had a career-best slash line of .295/.333/.477 over 93 plate appearances and 36 games. Engel recorded five doubles, one triple, three home runs, 12 RBIs and 11 runs scored, and he made 16 starts in right field, four in left and three in center. He also caught the final out of Lucas Giolito’s no-hitter on Aug. 25 against Pittsburgh, making a slick play on Erik González’s tailing line drive to right.
Engel had a .310/.355/.466 slash line against left-handed pitching over the past two seasons, going 36-for-116 in 2019-20. The White Sox added left-handed-hitting outfielder Adam Eaton via free agency during this offseason, with Eaton featuring a career .801 OPS against right-handed pitching. At the very least, this duo could form a solid combination in right field in an attempt to upgrade output at that position for a team with serious World Series thoughts.
“It's up to [manager] Tony [La Russa] to put the players in the best position to succeed, and we'll see how things evolve,” said White Sox general manager Rick Hahn during a recent Zoom interview. “I will say, fundamentally, having multiple quality options is a good thing.
“Obviously, our depth is going to be tested over the course of a seven-, eight-, however-long-month season we wind up with here in the end. Having as many quality options who can help us win is a good thing, and certainly we view Engel that way, and obviously view Adam Eaton that way as well.”
Engel had a .627 OPS in 26 games played for the 2019 White Sox before being optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on May 5. He returned on July 19 and immediately put together three straight multi-hit games against Tampa Bay. Engel hit .310 with an .891 OPS over his final 18 games that season.
“If I don't get sent down last year, I don't know if I'm where I'm at today,” said Engel during a playoff Zoom. “It's definitely something I tried to make the most of, and I'm glad I'm able to be where I'm at now.”
“Adam Engel had a real nice year last year, especially against left-handed pitching, and he sort of factors into solving some of the right field underperformance we had last year,” added Hahn in a December Zoom. “And a healthy Leury García may be a factor in improving some of the right field production.”
