AL HR king Judge to receive key to New York City
Aaron Judge’s chase to eclipse Roger Maris’ single-season American League home run record produced one of sports’ most compelling storylines in 2022, and the Yankees slugger will soon be rewarded with a key to the City of New York.
Mayor Eric Adams told Audacy's 1010 WINS on Thursday that plans are underway for the city to formally recognize Judge, who hit 62 home runs last season to earn his first American League Most Valuable Player Award.
“The team is putting it together now,” Adams said. “We’re communicating with the Yankees organization. If they accept, we would love to give it to Aaron Judge. It was a historical moment.”
Judge signed a nine-year, $360 million contract with the Yankees in December.
First awarded in 1702, the symbolic Key to the City resembles a large skeleton key and is “a beloved symbol of civic recognition and gratitude reserved for individuals whose service to the public and the common good rises to the highest level of achievement,” according to the city’s website.
The entire Yankees roster received keys to the city after the team’s World Series championship in 2009. In recent years, City Hall has also honored former pitcher Dwight Gooden (2017) and the 1969 Miracle Mets (2019).
