Judge, Escobar named top players for September
While all eyes were on Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge’s pursuit of the American League home run record and a Triple Crown, Mets third baseman Eduardo Escobar was having himself a great month on the other side of town. The two were named the Players of the Month for September on Monday.
Judge’s 1.434 OPS in September was 258 points better than that of any other qualifier, as he hit .417/.565/.869 with 10 homers, eight doubles, 17 RBIs and 30 walks in 25 games.
The Yankees slugger hit his 61st homer of the season on Sept. 28, tying Roger Maris’ single-season AL record set in 1961.
Judge also won AL Player of the Month honors earlier this season for the months of May and July.
This marks the first monthly award of Escobar’s career. He became the first Mets player since David Wright in 2010 to win an NL Player of the Month Award.
Overall, Escobar hit .340/.393/.650 with eight homers, four doubles, a triple and 24 RBIs in 26 September games. He had at least one RBI in 11 games during the month, and the Mets went 10-1 in those games.
