With Spring Training on the horizon, it’s time to make your fantasy baseball picks for the upcoming season.

Here’s a look at our second basemen rankings, headlined by a superstar new to the position, for the 2024 fantasy baseball season.

Tier 1: Mookie Betts

While our positional assignments for these rankings are typically based on the position where the player spent the most time in 2023, we're making an exception and listing Betts here instead of with the outfielders, because his arrival at the keystone changes the dynamic at one of fantasy's shallower spots. (Betts logged 70 games there last year.)

From a statistical standpoint, Betts had one of his finest seasons at the age of 30 in 2023, hitting .307 with a career-high 39 homers and a .987 OPS, not to mention 107 RBIs, 126 runs and 14 stolen bases.

Tier 2: Ozzie Albies, Marcus Semien, Jose Altuve

Albies was back to his All-Star form in 2023 after an injury-riddled 2022 season. The Braves’ second baseman set career highs in home runs (33) and RBIs (109) while hitting .280. Albies added 13 stolen bases and 96 runs scored while batting near the top of Atlanta’s powerful lineup for most of the season.

Semien led the American League in runs (122) and hits (185) during his second season in a Rangers uniform. He added 29 home runs and 100 RBIs for Texas, both excellent numbers from the keystone position. Semien, who has played in at least 161 games in each of his last four full seasons, is as consistent as they get at second base.

Altuve didn’t debut during the 2023 season until mid-May after fracturing his right thumb in the World Baseball Classic, but he was white-hot at the plate from then on. In just 90 games, Altuve finished with 17 home runs, 14 stolen bases, 76 runs and 51 RBIs while hitting .311. Altuve has been as consistent as they come throughout his 13-year career, and there’s little reason to believe he won’t keep it up in ’24.

Tier 3: Gleyber Torres, Nico Hoerner, Ha-Seong Kim, Ketel Marte, Bryson Stott

Aside from a dreadful 2021 season, Torres has quietly been one of the most consistent hitters at the second base position over the past half-decade. Torres hit 25 home runs while driving in 68 and scoring 90 runs for the Yankees last season. He also added a solid .273 average and 13 stolen bases, providing value across the board for fantasy owners.

Hoerner was one of the best values on the board as far as second basemen go during the 2023 season. After stealing 20 bags in 2022, Hoerner led all second basemen in stolen bases (43), finishing sixth overall, taking advantage of baseball’s new rules encouraging base-stealing. Splitting time as the Cubs’ leadoff and two-hole hitter, Hoerner also added 98 runs scored, which trailed only Semien at the position.

Kim provided an all around solid season at the plate along with Gold Glove defense for the Padres last season. In his third big league season, Kim had career highs nearly across the board, hitting 17 homers, stealing 38 bases with 60 RBIs, 84 runs scored and a .260 batting average.

Marte bounced back from a disappointing 2022 season to have one of best of his career for the National League champion D-backs. Marte joined Albies and Semien as the only second basemen to have 25+ home runs, 90+ runs scored and 80+ RBIs in 2023. Marte also hit .329 with 10 extra-base hits (two home runs) during Arizona’s World Series run, which bodes well for his 2024 prospects.

Like Hoerner, Stott took full advantage of the new rules making it easier on base stealers, swiping 31 bags in 2023. Stott also improved his batting average (.280) and popped a few more home runs (15) than he did during his rookie year in 2022. If Stott is able to take a similar leap in ’24, he’ll be one of the very best fantasy options at second base out there.

Tier 4: Andrés Giménez, Zack Gelof, Luis Arraez, Thairo Estrada

Giménez took a slight step back from his All-Star caliber season in 2022, but still finished as one of the best second basemen in baseball fantasy-wise. Giménez hit 15 homers and stole 30 bases, joining Kim and Stott as the only players at the position to breach those numbers. Giménez’s average dipped from .297 in ’22 to .251 last season, but even if that number holds steady, he has potential to finish near the top of the 2B fantasy board.

In a brief 69 games, Gelof was a bright spot for the A’s in 2023, smacking 14 home runs with 14 swipes in 300 plate appearances while posting a .267/.337/.504 slash line. Extrapolate that over a full season and Gelof becomes one of the best second basemen in baseball. Entering his age-24 season, Gelof still has plenty of room to grow as well.

Looking for some batting average help? Look no further than Arraez. After flirting with hitting .400 early on, Arraez finished with a .354 average in 2023. He doesn't provide much power (10 homers in 2023) or speed (three stolen bases), but his bat is as consistent as any across the Majors.

Estrada’s numbers won’t jump off the page, but his production has been as solid as any at the second base position over the last two seasons. Estrada hit 14 home runs in both 2022 and 2023 while stealing 20+ bases and hitting .260 or better in each season. He figures once again to slot in near the top of the Giants’ lineup, providing plenty of opportunities to drive in and score runs.

Tier 5: Matt McLain, Nolan Gorman, Jonathan India, Edouard Julien

Similar to Betts, we've decided to place McLain with the second basemen even though he played more games at shortstop in 2024. Part of an impressive crop of Reds youngsters, McLain made an immediate impact as a rookie in 2023, hitting .290 with 16 homers and 14 steals over 89 games. He was poised to be a Top 5 option among players with second-base eligibility, but he has been dropped in our rankings after suffering a shoulder injury during Spring Training.

Gorman has dealt with a back injury on-and-off since 2020, but when healthy, he can crush the ball with anyone. Gorman hit 27 home runs in just 119 games in 2023, adding seven stolen bases to boot.

India may not have the upside of other second base options, but he provides a solid floor for fantasy managers. If he can repeat last year’s 17 homers and 14 stolen bags, India is a strong pickup on the fifth tier of second basemen.

Julien splashed onto the scene for the Twins last season, hitting 16 home runs with an .839 OPS. If he can build off his strong rookie campaign, Julien could be one of the best fantasy values at second base.
