What's next? Here are the Division Series matchups
After a thrilling Wild Card Series weekend, the Division Series field is set. All but one of the four matchups will be between division rivals, with the Guardians and Yankees being the outlier.
Here are the matchups for the 2022 Division Series, which begin on Tuesday.
Phillies vs. Braves
Game 1: 1:07 p.m. ET, FOX
The Phillies won a playoff series for the first time since 2010 to advance to the NLDS, and they will kick off the 2022 Division Series slate against the reigning-champion Braves.
The Braves and Phillies played each other fairly evenly in 2022, as the season series tilted 11-8 in favor of the Braves. In those games, seven were decided by two or fewer runs.
The last time the two teams met in the postseason, Philadelphia toppled Atlanta in six games in the 1993 NLCS to advance to the World Series.
Mariners vs. Astros
Game 1: 3:37 p.m. ET, TBS
The Mariners came back from a seven-run deficit to shock the Blue Jays in Game 2 of the ALWCS, and now they will face the top dog in the AL. This season, Houston got the best of Seattle, taking 12 of 19 games in the regular season.
The key to this series may come down to pitching, as both teams have excellent staffs. Both ranked in the top five among AL teams, with the Astros standing at a 2.90 ERA and the Mariners at 3.59. MLB ERA leader and AL Cy Young favorite Justin Verlander will test Seattle early as he opens the series for Houston.
Guardians vs. Yankees
Game 1: 7:37 p.m. ET, TBS
The only matchup that isn’t a division rivalry, the Guardians and Yankees will face off in the postseason for the second time in three years. The two squads met in the 2020 AL Wild Card Series, when New York swept Cleveland.
The Guardians flashed some superb pitching in their two Wild Card Series games against the Rays, allowing just one run across 24 innings. The second of the two went 15 innings and ended on an Óscar González walk-off home run, the first in franchise history in a series clincher.
Drama has already shrouded the Yankees, as Aroldis Chapman was left off the ALDS roster due to missing a team workout, but despite that, New York is as dangerous as ever. Aaron Judge broke the AL record for most homers in a season with 62 and the team ranked first in the Majors with 254 homers -- 40 more than the next closest AL team, the Astros -- and second in the AL in team OPS at .751.
Padres vs. Dodgers
Game 1: 9:37 p.m. ET, FS1
The Padres took down a 101-win Mets team in the NLWCS on the road and will have to face another powerhouse in the 111-win Dodgers. This is the second time the two teams have met in the postseason, as the Dodgers swept the Padres in the 2020 NLDS en route to their first World Series title in over 30 years.
In the regular season, the Dodgers dominated the Padres, winning 14 of 19, and have won 32 of 48 vs. San Diego since the start of 2020. Their most recent series came on Sept. 27-29 and included two extra-inning thrillers.
