Major League Baseball, the Washington Nationals and the Nationals Dream Foundation today announced the 2018 All-Star Legacy initiative, which will lead to a variety of community enrichment projects throughout Greater Washington D.C. Through this annual Midsummer Classic program, approximately $5 million will go toward renovation and improvement activities designed to leave a lasting impact throughout the local community as well as support national charitable organizations with close ties to baseball. 
The 2018 All-Star Legacy effort features improvements to youth baseball playing fields & facilities, a local Boys & Girls Club, a USO depot serving military families throughout the region, youth-focused areas of a new affordable housing complex, and a mobile dental unit for underserved communities. The various All-Star Legacy projects will be unveiled leading up to the 89th MLB All-Star Game presented by Mastercard.  
Approximately $5 Million to Local Projects and National Charities
Major League Baseball, the Washington Nationals and the Nationals Dream Foundation plan to donate approximately $5 million, a significant portion of which will go toward the All-Star Legacy initiative. The donation also will support national charitable partners of Major League Baseball, including Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the Jackie Robinson Foundation and Stand Up To Cancer, among others. Funds raised from Gatorade All-Star Workout Day on Monday, July 16th will support the Legacy efforts. Since 1997, MLB and host All-Star Clubs have donated approximately $85 million through the All-Star Legacy initiative. 
2018 All-Star Legacy Projects 
•   Nationals All-Star Field at Walker Mill Regional Park (Prince George's County, Md.) -- One youth baseball field, the "Nationals All-Star Field," will be fully renovated while a secondary field will be reconfigured and improved to allow different age groups to utilize the fields and expand youth baseball play overall. Areas of improvements will include field grading, upgrades to sod and ballfield mix, and the additions of a brand new irrigation system, scoreboard, covered dugouts, bleachers with shade structures, fencing, batting cage and storage shed. Upgrades to the field will allow for a variety of youth-focused activities, including PLAY BALL events (e.g., Scotts MLB Pitch, Hit & Run; Jr. Home Run Derby), youth showcase and league games, and more. The Prince George's County Parks and Recreation Foundation and Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation will be able to promote baseball and healthy, active lifestyles to more than 3,000 kids.
•    All-Star Pavilion at Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy (Washington D.C.) -- The Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy has become a hub for youth baseball and softball in the District, and the new All-Star Pavilion, which will be located next to the Academy's main field, will be a key element to programming and events moving forward. The new All-Star Pavilion will be a 2,880 square foot open-air space that will cover four short-throw batting cages. These covered batting cages will provide much needed, weather-protected spaces and give scholar-athletes the ability to practice their baseball and softball skills in an open and airy environment. Additionally, the All-Star Pavilion will allow for the creation of an outdoor gathering area with picnic tables for the Academy's famers' market and community use. The All-Star Pavilion will be used year-round.
•    Youth Baseball Complex at Fred Crabtree Park (Fairfax County, Va.) -- In association with the Fairfax County Park Authority, MLB, the Nationals and the Dream Foundation will work to renovate two youth baseball fields that will serve as a beacon for youth baseball players in Northern Virginia. This field renovation project will expand overall play by enlarging one of the fields, accommodating various age levels. The improvements will include laser grading of the field being expanded and an extended irrigation system, as well as the additions of new scoreboards, covered dugouts, bleachers with shade structures, and enhancements to a storage shed, fencing, batting cages, bullpens, a concession stand and restrooms.  
•    All-Star Teen Room, Playground, Computer Lab & Community Room at SOME Spring Road (Washington D.C.) -- MLB, the Nationals and the Dream Foundation will provide a teen room, playground, computer lab and community room in cooperation with a much larger project with SOME (So Others Might Eat) Spring Road. SOME Spring Road is offering safe, affordable housing to 37 homeless and extremely low-income families, including more than 100 children, currently living in Washington D.C. SOME's high-level supportive programs will be housed in these new MLB & Nationals-supported areas, and will give the resident children the ability to safely play and have fun right outside of their front door. Providing onsite programming for Spring Road's resident children and teens not only eliminates transportation barriers impacting participation, but will also give parents peace of mind knowing that their children are safe at their family's home base.
•    USO-Metro All-Star Depot at Fort Belvoir (Fairfax County, Va.) -- This project will fully renovate a 12,000 square foot USO logistics facility at Fort Belvoir and provide a new HVAC system and commercial-grade refrigeration units. Primarily, the facility is used to receive and store non-perishable goods and program supplies that are delivered weekly to the nine USO-Metro locations in the Washington D.C. region. This renovation will increase the amount of products and supplies that can be stored at the facility, including the addition of bulk perishable foods to the inventory distributed to the nine USO-Metro locations. The facility also serves as an important program and event venue throughout the year, and renovations will expand USO-Metro's reach and provide more programming throughout the year to local service members and their families.
•   Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington -- All-Star Teen Room at Richard England Clubhouse #14 (Washington D.C.) -- This project will include a complete renovation and expansion of Clubhouse #14's Teen Room, including new furniture, TVs, computers and games, allowing much needed space and supplies for multifaceted afterschool activities. Four inoperative HVAC units will be replaced, providing a temperate climate year-round, for the entire Clubhouse. Many inoperable doors will also be replaced, providing increased safety for all at Clubhouse #14. With this effort, MLB, the Nationals and the Dream Foundation hope to help retention rates among current members as well as attract new ones to Clubhouse #14.
•   Mobile Dental Unit with Children's National (Various Locations Throughout Greater D.C.) -- MLB, the Nationals, the Dream Foundation, and Jeff Franzen and Sons will provide a brand-new mobile dental unit serving 19 sites in Wards 7 & 8 and Prince George's County. There is a major dental health professional shortage in these areas with reports of just one dentist for every 4,000 residents (less than half of the national average) and this unit will bring dental health professionals directly to more children and provide them with much needed dental services. The unit will also provide a more comfortable experience for both health professionals and children being treated. Additionally, the new unit will come with the latest dental equipment and more patient chairs to serve more children than the previous unit allowed. Children's National, the leading pediatric health system in the Washington D.C. area, launched a mobile dental unit in 2001 to serve District of Columbia's Wards 7 & 8 and Prince George's County, Maryland; this mobile dental unit will replace the existing, outdated unit.
