Nationals players have their names splashed across scoreboards around the league every day. In some instances, what is displayed is different from their official first names. Get to know the story behind their names and nicknames.
Stone Garrett: Gregory Stone Garrett
“My dad’s nickname was Rock. … He says they called him Rock because his brothers were older, and he was the tough kid playing football in the street with the older kids. So they were like, ‘This dude’s a rock.’ That’s how I got Stone. We used to have a dog named Pebbles, a cocker spaniel. So Gregory Stone Garrett, but the second I was born, it’s always been Stone. My mom wanted to name me after my dad -- that’s where Gregory came from -- and my dad wanted me to be Stone.”
CJ Abrams: Paul Christopher Abrams, Jr.
“My dad called me CJ since I was born. … Really, the only time I’ve heard my real name is either roll call in school the first time or at the doctor. … Chris Jr. -- I’m following in [my dad’s] footsteps. He’s the one that brought me into this world and brought me up.”
Hobie Harris: Robert Harris
“Hobie comes from the Hobie Cat sailboat. My dad and my grandfather grew up sailing. My real name is actually Robert, so I’m named after my dad. … Being the first born, my dad was torn between the name Hobie and then giving me his namesake, so they just decided to use both. … I’ve really never gone by Robert; I’ve gone by Hobie my entire life. … [People mispronounce it] all the time. The biggest miss that I get is ‘Hobby.’ I honestly get that one about 90 percent of the time. … My wife and I went on our honeymoon last year to Jamaica, and they had a Hobie Cat that was docked right at the resort. I took a picture on it.”
Corey Dickerson: McKenzie Corey Dickerson
“It was my grandfather’s name. It was my mom’s dad. … My brother does the same thing -- it’s Timothy Craig.”
Thaddeus Ward: Goes by Thaddeus professionally and Thad conversationally
“I kind of see it as a way to honor [my parents] and respect the decision they made and the name they gave me. … My parents weren’t decided on a name when my mom was pregnant with me. They weren’t super close, but they were fairly close to my due date. They were sitting in mass, and the gospel reading that day had mentioned the name St. Jude Thaddeus, and my parents loved Thaddeus.”
Jake Irvin: Jacob David Irvin
“My mom calls me Jacob, a couple friends from kindergarten call me Jacob, a few of my college teammates call me Jacob more as a joke. … I stopped going by it in first grade because we had other Jacobs in our class. So it was just easier to go by Jake, and I was fine with not being referred to by my full name.”
