WASHINGTON -- Matt Wieters spent the spring working on some adjustments to his swing, tweaks he believed would help him bounce back from the worst season of his career. A left oblique injury to start the season hindered that progress, but when Wieters returned from the disabled list this week, he thought the injury was behind him.
So he had an encouraging at-bat in the fourth inning of Saturday's 6-2 win over the Rockies at Nationals Park, when he swatted a solo home run against Rockies right-hander Jon Gray. It was his first homer of the year, hammered 405 feet into center field. 
Then in the sixth, Wieters singled in a run off Gray to tie the game at 2. With Wieters on first and Bryce Harper at third, the next batter Michael A. Taylor laid down a bunt down the first-base line that Ian Desmond scooped up and flipped to catcher Tony Wolters who tagged out a sliding Harper in a close play at the plate. The Nationals challenged the call, which was overturned on review, giving the Nationals a 3-2 lead. Moises Sierra capped off the inning with a two-run double. 

Wieters, who was activated from the disabled list on Wednesday, had been hitless in his return and was just 1-for-11 on the season. He has been splitting time at catcher with Pedro Severino, who has played well since being called up from the Minors.
Production from Wieters could be huge with the Nationals offense struggling to score runs recently and being hampered by injuries.
