WASHINGTON -- Juan Soto still has a chance to be named a reserve player for the 2021 All-Star Game after the starters were announced Thursday night.

The 22-year-old outfielder was edged out in voting by Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Braves and Nick Castellanos and Jesse Winker of the Reds.

Mookie Betts and Chris Taylor of the Dodgers, Joc Pederson of the Cubs, Mike Yastrzemski of the Giants and Bryce Harper of the Phillies also were National League outfield finalists.

Pitchers and reserves will be revealed on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The All-Star Game is taking place July 13 at Coors Field in Colorado on FOX.

“That would be great,” Soto said on Monday of potentially making the team. “I know my family’s really excited to see me there. I’m really happy for it.”

The 2020 NL batting title winner entered Thursday slashing .280/.400/.441 with an .841 OPS. He was tied for second-most walks in the NL (48) and fifth in OBP. Soto was batting .348 with eight RBIs, a home run and four stolen bases in his last 12 games, going into Thursday.

“Juan Soto’s power numbers aren’t exactly where he wants them to be, but he’s put some good numbers up,” manager Dave Martinez said on Wednesday. “So I think he deserves a chance to be in the All-Star Game.”
