Kyle Schwarber, Jeimer Candelario, then Derek Law -- the Nationals have had success in identifying bounceback candidates who were non-tendered by their previous clubs. This offseason, the Nats could explore the same avenue to add to their roster. Here is a look at five intriguing players who could fit their needs.

SP Griffin Canning
Age: 28
2024: 6-13, 5.19 ERA, 31 starts

Canning was non-tendered by the Braves after they acquired him from the Angels in the Oct. 31 Jorge Soler trade. The right-hander was a 2017 second-round Draft pick and a member of the Angels from 2019-24. He won a Gold Glove in 2020, missed the entire '22 season because of a lower back stress fracture and threw 171 2/3 innings last year.

1B Connor Joe
Age: 32
2024: .228/.320/.368, nine home runs

Joe could address two needs of the Nationals: a first baseman and a veteran leader with perseverance. Joe batted .247 with a .760 OPS, 31 doubles and 11 home runs in 2023, his first season with the Pirates. He hit .242 before the All-Star break last season, but his production dropped to .190 in the second half.

LHP Hoby Milner
Age: 33
2024: 5-1, 4.73 ERA, one save, 60 relief appearances

The Brewers non-tendered the eight-year veteran Milner. His efficiency dipped last season after he posted a career-best 1.82 ERA in 73 relief appearances in 2023. Milner is one season removed from recording a 0.964 WHIP and a 238 ERA+.

RHP Jordan Romano
Age: 31
2024: 1-2, 6.59 ERA, eight saves, 15 relief appearances

Romano is coming off an injury-shortened season with the Blue Jays in which he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow in July. But he has a notable résumé as a closer, where the Nationals have a vacancy after non-tendering Kyle Finnegan. From 2021-23, Romano earned 95 saves with a 2.37 ERA and garnered two All-Star selections.

RHP Jacob Webb
Age: 31
2024: 2-5, 3.02 ERA, two saves, 60 relief appearances

Webb pitched in nearby Baltimore for the past season and a half. He also is familiar with the NL East, having played three of his five seasons with the Braves. Webb pitched to a 0.6 HR/9 rate last season and holds a career 2.98 ERA.
