Former top Dodgers prospect Diego Cartaya traded to Twins
The Twins added depth to their catching stable on Thursday, acquiring former top prospect Diego Cartaya from the Dodgers in exchange for Minor League right-hander Jose Vasquez.
Cartaya, 23, split the 2024 season between the Dodgers’ Triple-A Oklahoma City and Double-A Tulsa affiliates, posting a combined .221/.323/.363 batting line with 11 home runs in 400 plate appearances. He’s received high marks for his defense, including a plus arm according to MLB Pipeline, and improving receiving skills.
The right-handed hitter entered the 2023 season as Pipeline’s No. 14 prospect in all of baseball, but he has struggled to make contact the past two seasons. He’s big (listed at 6-foot-3 and 219 pounds) and strong and hit a combined 30 homers over those two years, leaving hope that he can still produce more offense as he develops.
Cartaya signed with the Dodgers as an international free agent out of Venezuela and was MLB Pipeline’s No. 3 prospect in the 2018 international signing class. He slots in as the Twins’ No. 23 prospect following the move.
The Twins now have four catchers on the 40-man roster, with Cartaya joining Christian Vázquez, Ryan Jeffers, and Jair Camargo. Minnesota also traded for Minor League catcher/utility-man Mickey Gasper from the Red Sox last month.
The Dodgers had designated Cartaya for assignment on Tuesday following their signing of Hyeseong Kim. That removed him from their 40-man roster and meant that they had seven days to trade him or place him on outright or unconditional release waivers.
