ATLANTA -- Marlins Park withstood the wrath of Hurricane Irma on Sunday, sustaining minor roof damage, but the building did not experience any flooding or water damage, the Marlins said in a statement. But whether the Marlins play host to the Brewers on Friday still has not been determined.
The retractable-roof ballpark was examined on Monday, and it could be ready for the weekend, but the bigger issue is whether the city of Miami and the Little Havana section -- where Marlins Park is located -- will be up and running.
South Florida along with the rest of the state was pummeled by the powerful hurricane, leaving widespread debris and power outages.
"Following Hurricane Irma, starting today, we will be picking up debris from the trees surrounding Marlins Park," Marlins president David Samson said in a statement. "The ballpark did not experience any flooding or water damage.
"However, the TPO [rubber and plastic] membrane on the West vertical face of the center panel of the roof will need to be replaced immediately following the conclusion of the 2017 season. This represents approximately 6% of the entire roof membrane. This membrane serves to weatherproof the roof structure.
"Based on our initial assessment today, the building performed extremely well considering the intensity of the hurricane.
"We wish a safe and speedy recovery to our whole community and stand ready to help in any way our local government partners would like."
The Marlins wrapped up a four-game series at Atlanta on Sunday, and the club is off on Monday before facing the Phillies on Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park.
At this point, there is no firm contingency plan of having the Marlins play the Brewers at another location, although that could be a possibility.
"All indications that we've gotten indicate that it's a go in Miami," said Brewers manager Craig Counsell. "I don't think anything is for sure yet, but every piece of news we've received has been positive. Like I said before, I'm hoping that it's a go. Right now, it looks like it's on."
