Tigers-Guardians PPD May 21, moved to July 14
CLEVELAND -- For the seventh time this season, the Guardians were unable to play their scheduled game.
Impending thunderstorms in Northeast Ohio forced the postponement of Cleveland’s contest against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night. The game was rescheduled for July 14 at 7:10 p.m ET.
It was the Guardians’ sixth weather-related postponement in 17 original home dates. As a result, they have already played three doubleheaders at Progressive Field.
Major League Baseball also called off their May 11 game at the Chicago White Sox following multiple positive COVID-19 tests within the organization.
“And we’re in May,” team president Chris Antonetti said, shaking his head. “For better or worse, we’ve had a lot of curveballs thrown our way the last couple of years.”
Cleveland will send former AL Cy Young winner Shane Bieber to the mound against fellow right-hander Alex Faedo in the now two-game series finale on Sunday afternoon. The Guardians beat Detroit 6-1 on Friday.
Thursday, July 14 was a mutual off-day before the teams’ next series in Cleveland, which becomes a four-day set leading into the All-Star break.
“We're a young pitching staff and a young hitting club, and we still think our best baseball is ahead of us,” Antonetti said. “I'm encouraged by what they've done so far.”
