Civale on Guardians' ALDS roster; Sandlin shut down
NEW YORK -- The Guardians knew they’d need to get starter Aaron Civale on their roster for the AL Division Series against the Yankees, but when righty reliever Nick Sandlin’s MRI revealed a season-ending upper teres major strain, the club had to make another move.
Guardians manager Terry Francona said Monday afternoon that Sandlin and Kirk McCarty will not be on the ALDS roster. Civale and righty reliever Cody Morris will take their places. Sandlin will need to be shut down for the next five to six weeks, effectively ending his season.
“They are pretty dangerous right-hand hitters,” Francona said. “[Sandlin] would be, what we would hope, a huge weapon. Obviously that's not going to happen. I kind of feel more for him than -- well, I always feel like we'll figure it out. Kind of feel more for him.”
Civale will be added to the Guardians’ bullpen mix for Game 1 of the ALDS at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. From there, the team will determine if it's best to keep him ready as a potential starter for later in the series or to leave him in the bullpen.
