Giants to pay Minor Leaguers through Sept. 7

Commitment now extended to end of MiLB season

June 12th, 2020

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants showed their commitment to their homegrown talent on Wednesday by pledging to pay their Minor League players through Sept. 7, which would have marked the end of the Minor League season.

The Giants had previously announced that they would continue to distribute $400 weekly stipends to their Minor League players through at least June 30.

The extension will give the club’s Minor Leaguers a bit more financial security as they continue to wait for Major League Baseball and the Players Association to reach a resolution on a return to play in 2020.

Wednesday’s announcement could also help give the Giants an advantage in recruiting non-drafted players to their organization this year. Though the 2020 MLB Draft was cut to five rounds instead of the usual 40 because of the coronavirus pandemic, clubs will be able to sign an unlimited number of non-drafted players for bonuses up to $20,000 beginning on Sunday at 6 a.m. PT.

"Like every organization, we want to sell our entire player development experience," president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said. "I think that there's going to be kind of an overarching pitch that we have been an organization that has always emphasized player development. We're continuing to put a lot of resources into investing in these players as people and as baseball players. Just from some of our informal conversations with agents, that's going to be the priority for these players.

"Understanding what organizations like and value in them as players -- and what kind of experience overall teams and organizations are going to be able to provide for them to help them be the best players that they can be and help them be as comfortable as they can be. Anything along those lines that makes us more attractive to players will certainly work its way into the recruiting process."
