FIRST FULL SEASON/2011
: Coolbaugh is in his sixth season in the Texas organization, his first full campaign as the club's major league hitting coach...he was named to the post on June 8, 2011 after previously coaching for the club's farm teams...in 2011, Texas hitters led the majors in batting average while posting the fewest strikeouts in the big leagues, the first team to do that since the 2006 Twins...Rangers also had second-most hits, homers, total bases, and extra-base hits in majors in '11, posting third-highest run total and slugging pct...after Coolbaugh took over as hitting coach on June 8, Texas led the majors in average (.294), homers (138), and slugging (.477).
COACHING CAREER
: Prior to joining the big league staff in June 2011, Coolbaugh served as a coach in the Rangers farm system for nearly 4 1/2 years from 2007-11...he was the organization's Triple-A hitting coach at Oklahoma City (2009-10) and Round Rock (early 2011) after serving in the same role at Double-A Frisco in 2007-08...prior to joining the Rangers he spent five years as a manager and coach in the Arizona Diamondbacks farm system... he was a manager at High-A High Desert (2000) and High-A Lancaster (2001), as well as Double-A El Paso (2003-04)...also had stints as the El Paso hitting coach (1999 and 2002), the first tour as a player/coach...had an abbreviated stint as manager in the 1999 Arizona Instructional League, going 11-9.
PLAYING CAREER
: Played in 167 games in his major league career over parts of four seasons with Texas (1989-90), San Diego (1991) and St. Louis (1994)...he made his big league debut with the Rangers on Sept. 2, 1989...the corner infielder was a career .215 (93-432) hitter with 8 home runs and 41 RBI, appearing most often at third base...he spent 12 seasons in professional baseball with a two-year stint in Japan and one year in Korea...was originally selected by the Rangers in the third round of the 1987 June draft after an All-American career at the University of Texas.

: Resides in Colleyville, Texas, with his wife, Susan, son Tyler (10/29/93) and daughter Chandler (9/8/96)...ran his own construction business, North Texas Custom Home Builders, between coaching tours in the Arizona and Texas organizations...recipient of Minor League Baseball's inaugural Mike Coolbaugh Award in 2007, named after his brother who passed away while coaching first base for the Tulsa Drillers in July, 2007...the award is an annual distinction reserved for the individual who shows an outstanding baseball work ethic, knowledge of the game and skill in mentoring young players on the field...was also the first recipient of the Texas League's initial Mike Coolbaugh Award in 2007, presented annually to the league's top coach.
