Grew up in the rural hometown of Sabana Huguero, which is inland Dominican Republic and near the Haitian border...played baseball recreationally as a child in Huguero before moving to Santo Domingo with a brother to train as a professional baseball player...at the time of his move to Santo Domingo, he was topping out at 89...by the time he turned 20, he was reaching 94, which attracted the attention of local scouts...Despite his advanced age, the Mets signed Montero as a 20-year-old international free agent on Jan. 20, 2011...officially signed by Mets scouts Rafael Perez, Ismael Cruz and Gerardo Cabrera...After signing with the Mets, blossomed into a huge prospect, eventually starting the Futures Game for the World Team in 2013...entering the 2014 season, ranked as the Mets No. 2 pitching prospect, behind only RHP Noah Syndergaard and immediately ahead of RHP Jacob deGrom (per Fangraphs)...Struggled to find his footing in the Mets organization before undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2018... bounced between the Rangers and Mariners organizations in 2019-20 before finding himself traded at the 2021 trading deadline...Acquired by the Astros on July 27, 2021, alongside RHP Kendall Graveman in exchange for RHP Joe Smith and IF Abraham Toro...prior to the trade, had been designated for assignment by the Mariners...that trade has been a huge success for Houston...Graveman was a boon for the Astros bullpen down the stretch in 2021, while Montero proved to be invaluable for the club in 2022... on the Mariners side, Smith reached free agency after the 2021 and Toro has since been traded to the Brewers...Has played for four teams in his professional career in parts of eight seasons...reached free agency for the first time this offseason before re-signing with the Astros on Nov. 15, 2022...signed a three-year deal to stay in Houston through the 2025 season.

Appeared in 17 games for the Texas Rangers, going 0-1 with 8 saves and a 4.08 ERA (8 ER, 17.2 IP), 19 strikeouts and zero blown saves...Was the Rangers closer, going 8-for-8 in save opportunities...was one of just three pitchers in the Majors in 2020 with at least eight saves and no blown saves (also: CLE’s Brad Hand, 16-for-16; and NYY’s Zack Britton, 8-for-8)...He allowed an earned run in just four of his 17 appearances...Had a 2.19 ERA (3 ER, 12.1 IP) in 12 home appearances and opponents slashed .159/.229/.295/.525 (7-44) at home against him.
