Sean William Newcomb…is married, Sarah, and has a son, Teddy…graduated from Middleborough (MA) High School where he played both baseball and basketball…as a senior he helped lead the baseball team to a title by going 9-0 with three saves and a 0.46 ERA…pitched collegiately at the University of Hartford, starting nine games as a freshman in 2012 before suffering a season-ending injury…before going down to injury, Newcomb tossed a 7.0 inning no-hitter vs. Yale in the second game of a doubleheader, his first win on campus…as a junior in 2014, he posted a 1.25 ERA in 14 games (all starts) while going 8-2 and striking out 106 batters in 93.1 innings…pitched two seasons on the Cape for Wareham Gateman in 2012 and 2013.

Opened the year with Atlanta and appeared in three games as a reliever for them before being traded... Acquired by the Cubs on April 21 in exchange for RHP Jesse Chavez and cash... Appeared in three games for the Cubs before missing about a month on the Injured List from May 11 (retro to May 8)-June 12 with a left ankle sprain... Designated for assignment by Chicago on June 13... he cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A... Pitched with Triple-A Iowa from June 29-July 8, posting a 1.86 ERA (4er, 19.1ip) in seven games, one start... Had his contract selected by the Cubs on Aug. 4 and spent the next six weeks with the Cubs before being designated on Sept. 17.
2021
In his fifth major-league season made 32 appearances out of the bullpen and finished 2-0 with a 4.73 ERA (17 ER/32.1 IP). ...Marked the first time in his career that he did not start a game for Atlanta during the season...Averaged 11.97 strikeouts per nine innings, the highest rate among Braves pitchers...Began the year at Triple-A Gwinnett and went 3-0 with four saves and a 1.62 ERA in 15 relief appearances.
2020
In fourth major-league season made four starts for Atlanta and went 0-2 with a 11.20 ERA (17 ER/13.2 IP)...Newcomb averaged 3.1 innings pitched per game and did not pitch more than 4.2 innings in any of his starts...Was optioned to the alternate training site on 8/10 after his last start.

Pitched primarily in a relief role for the first time in his career and went 6-3 with a 3.16 ERA (24 ER/68.1 IP) in 55 games, including four starts... Opened the year in the starting rotation, before moving to the bullpen on 5/4...Had a 3.04 ERA (18 ER/53.1 IP) in 51 games in relief...Issued just 19 walks and struck out 57 hitters after joining the bullpen... He became just the second pitcher in Atlanta franchise history to go as long in his MLB debut and not allow an earned run…Larry McWilliams did so on July 17, 1978, also against the Mets, also in the first game of a doubleheader and also in Atlanta...
