Full name is Deven Sommer Marrero. Signed by Vaughn Williams (Red Sox). Was the top defensive college player available in the 2012 June Draft and the 2nd-best collegiate athlete available overall, according to Baseball America..Played in 150 games over 3 seasons at Arizona State University from 2010-12, earning all-conference honors in each year. Named 2011 Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Set a Sun Devils freshman record with a team-leading .397 AVG (62-for-156) in 2010. Chosen as a Cape Cod League All-Star in 2011, his 2nd season with Cotuit...Also led the Team USA National Collegiate Team with 19 hits and 14 RBI in 14 games in 2011. Earned All-State and All-County honors with American Heritage (FL) High School as a junior in 2008 during the school's state and national title-winning season, a team that also included Eric Hosmer. His cousin, 1B Chris Marrero, was also a 1st-round pick (WSH, 2006)...His cousin, OF/1B Christian Marrero, was selected by CWS in the 2005 June Draft (22nd round).

2017

Played a career-high 71 ML games over 5 stints with BOS...The Sox went 28-21 in his starts...Hit 4 HR and was 5-for-5 in SB attempts with BOS...Started 39 ML games at 3B, 6 at 2B, and 4 at SS...Also appeared at 1B for the 1st time in his pro career. With BOS, hit .291 (16-for-55) with a .944 OPS vs. LHP, recording 9 of his 13 XBH...From 5/24-6/29, hit .400 with a 1.305 OPS vs. LHP (10-for-25, 4 2B, 3 HR). Split the season between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket and earned Red Sox Minor League Defensive Player of the Year honors. Combined for a .976 fielding percentage (12 E/490 TC), all at SS. Between the 2 stops, batted .258 (117-for-454) with 30 2B, 2 3B, 6 HR, 59 RBI, 16 SB, 46 BB, and 65 R...Hit .287 (39-for-136) with a .384 OBP against left-handed pitching. Began the season with Portland and reached base safely in his first 11 games (.333, 16-for-48, 4 BB, .385 OBP). Ranked 3rd in the Eastern League with a .368 AVG (32-for-87) in June...Also named Red Sox Minor League Defensive Player of the Month for June. Chosen as Eastern League Player of the Week for 6/16-22 (.650, 13-for-20, 3B, HR, 4 RBI in 6 G). Was batting .291 (78-for-268) with a .371 OBP in 68 games prior to 7/2 promotion...Was the EL's leading SS with a .978 fielding percentage (6 E/271 TC) on that date. Split time between shortstop (29 games) and DH (35 games). Batted .341 (31-for-91) with runners on base. Knocked 1st career homer in 3rd on 6/26 at Tri-City...Hit a go-ahead solo shot in the 13th inning on 8/11 to give Lowell an eventual 6-5 win at Hudson Valley. Reached via hit or walk in 22 consecutive road games from 7/4-8/23 at .279 (24-for-86) with 15 walks. Chosen as the Red Sox Minor League Base Stealer of the Month for July after swiping a NYPL-high 12 bases in 15 attempts...Stole a season-high 3 bases on both 7/29 vs. State College and 8/15 vs. Aberdeen.
