Alex and his wife, Kelly, have two daughters, Chloe Elle and Everly Pauline...Chloe’s middle name is pronounced like the letter L and is a tribute to Alex’s mom, Lindsay...The couple has a Schnauzer mixed breed named Oscar, who won a poll on MLB.com as MLB’s Best Baseball Dog...Cobb found Oscar as a stray in Port Charlotte during Spring Training 2015 and eventually adopted him...Alex’s mom, Lindsay Miller-Cobb, was a nurse practitioner who passed away from a stroke at age 49 while Alex was in high school...His older brother, R.J., is a U.S...Army commander (4th Brigade, 101st Airborne) and was awarded a Purple Heart for his time in Iraq...Served as a Dodgers bat boy during Spring Training as a child for three years while they were in Vero Beach...Grew up a Red Sox fan and his family would make a nearly annual summer trip back to Boston, where Cobb was born, and take in a game at Fenway Park...Alex’s father, Rick, is an accountant...In addition to playing baseball at Vero Beach High School, Cobb was also a star quarterback...He returned in 2013 to have his high school baseball number (12) retired during a halftime ceremony...Was also the Homecoming King during high school...Cobb is the school’s first alumni to play in the Major Leagues.

Selected as an All-Star for the first time in his career as a replacement for Atlanta’s Bryce Elder...at 35 years, 277 days on the day of the All-Star game, Cobb was the fourth-oldest first-time All-Star in Giants history, and second-oldest in the SF-era...Cobb threw 1.0-scoreless inning with one strikeout at T-Mobile Park. Was one of the best pitchers at home in the Majors...went 5-2 with a 1.95 ERA, 60 strikeouts and a 1.04 WHIP in 74.0 innings at Oracle Park…his 1.95 ERA at Oracle was the best home ERA in MLB (min 70.0 ip). Held hitters to a .211 average, eight extra-base hits and a .567 OPS with runners in scoring position…the .567 opponent’s OPS ranked fifth-best in MLB (min. 150 batters faced with RISP). The Giants were 18-10 in 28 games when Cobb started…from May 6-July 15, SF was 10-1 when he started. Most commonly used his sinker (39.7%) and split finger (38.7%)...the sinker was worth a +4 run value on Baseball Savant. Went 6-3 with a 2.88 ERA, 77 strikeouts and a 1.18 WHIP in 17 night games compared to 1-4 with a 5.63 ERA in 11 day games…his 2.88 ERA at night was sixth-best in MLB (min. 95.0ip). On Aug. 29 vs. Cincinnati, Cobb came within one out of tossing a no-hitter, with a double by Spencer Steer ending the bid…he went on to finish off the complete game, the sixth of his career. The no-hit bid was Cobb’s second complete game of the season…his first was on April 24 vs. St. Louis, where he struck out four and allowed six hits and a walk over 9.0 shutout innings…then 35-years-old, Cobb was the oldest Giant to have multiple complete games in a single season since Mark Gardner had four complete games in 1998 as a 36-year-old. Had two stints on the Injured List, missing a total of 24 games…the first trip was due to a left oblique strain from June 15 to June 30…he battled through a left hip injury throughout the season before it forced him to the IL on Sept. 20, ending his season. Underwent surgery on his left hip on Oct. 31 in Vail, Colo. with Dr. Marc Philippon to address his labrum and ongoing impingement issues...timetable to return to pitching is approximately six months.

Finished his first season with SF posting a 3.73 ERA over 28 starts...His 149.2 innings were more than each of the last three seasons...he posted a career high in strikeouts (151) and his 3.73 ERA was his best over a full season since 2017 (3.66)…the 28 starts matched the second-most of his career (also 2018) and one shy of his career-best 29 from 2017...Missed time from April 19 to May 1 with a right adductor strain that he suffered while running to cover first base...his second IL stint was from June 4-19 after he was scratched from a start due to back tightness and hamstring pain, however he landed on the IL with a neck strain...His 9.08 K/9 was the second best of his career and his 3.51 SO/BB ratio was the best of his career...he had two double digit strikeouts games (4/12 vs. SD and 7/29 vs. CHC)...Had a 1.30 ERA in the first inning, fourth-best in MLB behind ATL’s Max Fried (0.90), KC’s Brady Singer (1.13) and ARI’s Zac Gallen (1.16)…Used his splitter 42.5% of the time which was second in all of MLB behind ATL’s Kirby Yates...Cobb had the highest splitter usage among starters...opponents were 66-for-269 (.245) with 62 strikeouts and a .227 xBA in at-bats ending with the splitter...He saw an uptick in velocity last on all his pitches...his splitter averaged 89.6 mph which was 2.1 mph faster than at any point in his career...his sinker averaged 94.8 mph, 2.1 mph faster his second fastest velocity...Gave up nine home runs in 149.2 innings giving him a 0.54HR/9 which was sixth best in MLB...Cobb has allowed 14 home runs total in 243.0ip over the last two seasons and his 0.52 HR/9 is the best in MLB (min 240ip) over that span.

Made 18 starts in his first season with the Angels...Had two trips to the injured list: May 8-20 with a blister on his right middle finger and July 30-Sept. 16 with right wrist inflammation...Struggled in April (7.16 ERA in four starts) and June (7.32 ERA in four starts)...Was terrific in three May starts around the blister issue, going 2-1 with a 0.53 ERA (1er, 17.0ip) and 20 strikeouts...Had a great start to July, going 2-0 with a 1.09 ERA (3er, 24.2ip) with 21 strikeouts in four starts before the second injured list stint...Posted a 3.45 ERA in three September starts after returning from the IL...Posted a 24.9 percent strikeout rate in 2021, an 8.1 percent increase over his rate in 2020 (16.8 percent) and much higher than his 2019 percentage (13.3)...His chase rate was in the 93rd percentile of pitchers according to Baseball Savant...Kept the ball off the barrel, posting a 4.2 barrel percentage, by far the lowest since they started tracking his data in 2016 (previous low was six percent in 2017).

Returned from Tommy John surgery to make 5 starts for the Rays in September…went 1-0 with a 3.06 ERA (17.2-IP, 6-ER) over his first 3 starts, leaving all of them with the lead or in a tie game…lost his final 2 starts, each time allowing at least 7 runs and failing to pitch beyond the 3rd inning. Was one of 16 pitchers to undergo Tommy John surgery in either 2014 or 2015 and return to the majors in 2016…that list includes his rehab partner, teammate RH Chase Whitley. Made his season debut on Sep 2 vs. TOR, going 705 days between major league starts…got no decision in the Rays 8-3 victory…5 of his first 10 batters faced reached base, then retired his last 10 BF in order including striking out the side in his 5th and final inning. On Sep 14 at TOR, enjoyed his best and longest start in his only win of the season…it was his first victory since Sep 23, 2014 at BOS, with 722 days in between…held the Jays to 1 R/ER in 6.2 IP. Threw changeups for 29.5 pct. of his total pitches, which would have led the majors if he had enough innings to qualify…TOR Marco Estrada led qualifiers at 28.6 pct. Made a combined 8 rehab starts for Class-A Charlotte and Triple-A Durham, going 0-3 with a 6.65 ERA (21.2-IP, 31-H, 16-ER)…began his rehab assignment on July 6 and made 2 starts for Charlotte, and began a second rehab assignment on July 29…progressed to Durham in August and was reinstated from the 60-day DL on Aug 29 when his rehab assignment expired. Was the fourth straight season he missed six weeks or more of action due to injury, and fifth time in six major league seasons overall…in 2014, suffered a left oblique strain in April that cost him six weeks…in 2013, missed 50 games after a concussion suffered on a line drive to the head by KC Eric Hosmer…in 2011, was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome, which required season-ending surgery in August.

Was the third consecutive season and the fourth time in his five major league seasons that he had missed six or more weeks due to injury...still, his 35 wins over those past five seasons are 3rd among Rays pitchers and his 32 wins over the past four seasons are 2nd…Rays Manager Kevin Cash had named him Opening Day starter on March 4...it would have been his first Opening Day assignment…Made 3 spring training starts including his last mound appearance on March 17 in the Rays 5-3 win over the Phillies at Clearwater...he pitched 3 perfect innings, but left early with elbow tightness and eventually was placed on the Opening Day disabled list.

After missing 50 games midseason with a concussion, he returned to become the Rays top starter over the final six weeks of the season going a team-best 5-1 with a 2.41 ERA in 9 starts... The Rays only 2 postseason wins were his starts (he was 1-0 with a win in the Wild Card Game at Cleveland…for more see below under "Postseason")... Was out June 16-Aug 14 after suffering a concussion from a line drive off the bat of KC Eric Hosmer at home on June 15…the ball struck him near his right ear…just 39 days before, TOR J.A. Happ was struck in the head by a line drive hit by Desmond Jennings at Tropicana Field…Happ was out nearly three months, May 7-Aug 5…Cobb also missed one start at the end of the May due to a small cut on his pitching hand... Spent the entire season with Double-A Montgomery and was named the club's Most Valuable Player despite missing the first month of the season with an oblique injury...made 23 appearances (22 starts)...His 2.71 ERA ranked 4th in the Southern League and in the Rays organization...has lowered his ERA every season, with each promotion through the minors...Recorded 128 SO, 3rd most in the SL and tied for 4th in the Rays system...as a starter, his 9.51 SO/9 IP ratio (117.1-IP, 124-SO) led the league...Struck out 10 or more batters in 3 of his final 6 starts, the first double-digit strikeout games of his five-year career...included was a career-high 13 on Aug 25 at Huntsville (Brewers)...Made 7 starts for the Peoria Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League following the season...Participated in the Rays Winter Development Program held in January at Tropicana Field.
