Dewon Cortez Brazelton graduated from Tullahoma (Tenn.) High...Attended Middle Tennessee State and was named 1st-team All-America by Baseball America after his junior season in which he recorded a 13-2 record with a 1.42 ERA...struck out a school-record 154 batters and allowed just 27 walks over 127 innings...his ERA ranked 3rd in the nation...was a fi nalist for the 2001 Golden Spikes Award...Went 6-0 with a team-record 0.65 ERA for Team USA in the summer of 2000...Awarded the 2004 Tony Conigliaro Award, presented to a Major League player who has overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination and courage...Made a $250,000 contribution to the baseball program at Middle Tennessee State in 2005.
2006
Began the season in the San Diego Padres rotation and recorded a 0-2 record with a 12.00 ERA in 9 games (2 starts) before being outrighted to Portland (AAA) on May 12...Went 5-7 with a 4.53 ERA (91.1 IP, 46 ER) in 17 appearances, including 16 starts, for Portland...also made 1 rehab appearance with the Padres rookie-level team in Arizona.
2005
Had three tours with the Rays in 2005...made eight starts and was 1-7 before being optioned to Triple-A Durham on May 11...used strictly in relief in his other two tours with the Devil Rays...failed to report to Durham when he was optioned in May and was placed on the restricted list from May 16-June 3...came off the list and was assigned to Double-A Montgomery and made one start for the Biscuits on June 21, in Montgomery vs. Tennessee, before being promoted to the Rays three days later...was optioned back to Durham on August 9 after compiling a 7.52 ERA in 10 relief outings for the Rays following his recall from Montgomery on June 24...returned to the Rays again on September 6...with the Devil Rays he allowed 151 base runners in 71.0 innings...as a starter was 1-7 with a 6.43 ERA (34 ER/42.0) IP) and in 12 relief appearances was 0-4...
2004
Posted the AL's 3rd best home ERA at 2.90 (IP-87, H-71, ER-28) and was 6-3 at Tropicana Field...Opponents batted .220 (71-322) off him at home...On the road he was 0-5 in 8 games (all starts) with a 9.62 ERA and opponents batted .350 (50-143) off him...Has an 0-11 career road record in 15 games, all starts...Of the 240 active pitchers with at least 15 career road starts, he is the only one without a win...The last player to start his career 0-11 on the road was Minnesota's Terry Felton (0-12, 1980-82)...The majors' longest current road losing streaks: Scott Elarton, Cleveland (12), Brazelton (11), Seattle's Ryan Franklin (10)...Joined the club from AAA Durham on June 2 and had an immediate impact...Rays were 9-5 in his first 14 starts...He went 2-0 in 5 games, 4 starts in June and the Rays won all four of his starts...His 2.05 ERA that month was the 3rd best month in club history...He allowed 2 ER or less in 8 of his first 11 starts...Thru August 22, he was 6-4 with a 3.31 ERA (IP-84.1, ER-31) in his first 15 games, 14 starts...From that point forward he was 0-4 with an 8.17 ERA (IP-36.1, ER-33) in 7 games, all starts...The Rays were 1-6 in his last 7 starts...His last win came August 22 vs. Oakland in a 2-1 win over Mark Redman...Dewon's line: IP-7, H-5, R-1, ER-1, BB-1, SO-1...On June 25 at home vs. the Marlins he was four outs from a no-hitter when Mike Lowell doubled...Was then lifted as he pitched a professional-high 125 pitches (7.2-IP, 1-H, 6-BB, 5-SO)...Danys Baez finished up to preserve the 2-0 shutout, Brazelton's second ML win, first since May 30, 2003 vs.Anaheim...Matched Tony Saunders (April 22, 1999 vs. Baltimore) for longest into a game any Ray has carried a no-hitter...Also carried a no-hitter thru 5.0 July 22 at Minnesota...got a no dec. in a 7-5 Rays loss...On Aug. 6 vs. Seattle he worked a career-high 8 innings allowing only 2 hits - both in the 3rd inning - but didn't get the decision in the Rays' 2-1 "walk-off" win in 10 innings....Rays won the game on a controversial obstruction call which allowed Carl Crawford to score from third base on Tino Martinez's short fly to leftfielder Raul Ibanez...3B umpire Paul Emmel ruled that shortstop Jose Lopez, in covering third base, attempted to block Crawford's view of Ibanez making the catch...Crawford was awarded home on the obstruction call and Lopez was charged with an error...Went 4-4, 4.71 in 10 starts at Durham...in his last 3 starts at Durham he pitched to a 2.75 ERA (IP-19.2, H-19, R-6,BB-6, SO-19)...Didn't allow a home run in 49.2 innings at Durham and allowed only one round tripper in his first 50.2 innings with the Devil Rays.
2003
The 23-year old rookie was up with the Rays from May 3 to June 24 and made 10 starts, posting a 1-6 record and a 6.89 ERA ... .pitched at Class A,AA,AAA and the big leagues in 2003...Former #1 pick (2001) in just his second pro season, began the year at AAA Durham (2-2, 4.21 ERA, 5-GS)...Was expected to make the rotation out of spring training, but was slowed with right knee and left groin injuries and made just 3 appearances...optioned to Durham on March 24...Promoted on May 3 and started that night at Detroit, his 3rd ML start ... worked 5.2 innings and left with a 6-3 lead (6-H, 3-R/ER, 1-BB, 4- SO, 2-HR-Higginson, Pena)...Tigers came back to tie but Rays won 8-6 in 10 innings.
2002
Made his Major League debut in 2002, making 2 starts for the Devil Rays and going 0-1 with a 4.85 ERA...also spent time in Orlando and Durham.
