Earned the win without throwing a pitch in the first game of a doubleheader on May 1 at Detroit, entering with two outs in the 7th and picking off Omar Infante... The O's took the lead in the top of the 8th inning and Ryan was replaced on the mound... STATS, Inc. records show no other pitcher winning a game without throwing a pitch since they began tracking pitches in 1986.

Tied Jorge Julio for 2nd-most appearances on the club with 67... Went more than 1.0 inning a total of 11 times during the season... Earned the win August 2 vs. Toronto, pitching 0.2 innings and stranding a runner... Appeared in 61 games in his first full major league season, second behind Buddy Groom (70) among Oriole relievers... Retired 45 of 61 first batters faced... Began and ended the season in the Orioles bullpen, with a 7-week stay at Rochester (AAA) in between... Appeared in 42 games for the Orioles, 4th among American League rookie pitchers... Allowed one run in his first 11 appearances (13.2IP) through May 3...Allowed runs in 7 of his next 9 outings (3.2IP, 16ER) before being optioned to Rochester on June9...Was recalled from Rochester on July 30... Was selected to the Futures Game at Boston's Fenway Park but did not pitch.

1999

Began the season at Chattanooga (AA) in the Cincinnati organization and finished the season in the Orioles bullpen... Was acquired by the Orioles with minor league pitcher Jacobo Sequea from the Reds on July 31 for pitcher Juan Guzman... After starting the season at Chattanooga, moved to Indianapolis (AAA) before being recalled by Cincinnati on July 26... Was tied for the minor league lead with 46 appearances at the time of his promotion and had made only 79 minor league appearances in his career... Made his Major League debut on July 28 at Los Angeles, his only appearance for the Reds... Was optioned to Indianapolis on July 30 and was traded to the Orioles the next day... Joined Rochester (AAA) before his contract was purchased by the Orioles on August 27... Made his Orioles debut on August 29 at Detroit... Earned his first major league win on September 13 vs. Seattle with 1.1 scoreless relief innings... His longest outing came in the final game of the season on October 1 vs. Boston when he pitched 3.2 innings of no-hit relief and struck out five.

1998

In first pro season, progressed from Rookie League Billings to AA Chattanooga, with a brief stop at Class A Charleston (SC)... Ranked 5th among Cincinnati's minor league pitchers with 10 saves... With Billings, finished 3rd among Pioneer League relief pitchers with 12.05 K/9 IP ratio.
