Jay and his wife, the former Candace Hart, were married on September 18, 1993, and have 2 children, son Wyatt (7/16/96) and daughter McKinna (7/19/00)...pitched 3 seasons at Mississippi State University, with 67 career appearances (11 starts)...set school saves record (10) in 1991 and earned all-freshman, All-American honors that year...a first round selection by Baltimore in June, 1993 amateur draft, joining Will Clark and Rafael Palmeiro as Bulldog first round picks...played baseball, football, and basketball at West Lauderdale HS (MS) (graduated '90)...a 2-time all-state pitcher...pitched on Team USA squad in 1991 and USA Junior National Team in 1990...selected by San Diego in 11th round of June, 1990 amateur draft but did not sign.

Pitched in a club-high tying 67 games in 1999, his most appearances since 1997 with Florida ... was second on the club with four saves, equaling the total he had in 1998 for Houston ... After struggling to a 7.36 ERA (6 ER/7.1 IP) in April, he rebounded to post a 2.45 ERA (4 ER/14.2 IP) mark in May and a 2.16 ERA (2 ER/8.1 IP) clip in June ... Pitched the final two innings at San Francisco on 4/13 to earn his first save of the year in a 7-3 win ... Secured his first win of the year when he worked the eighth inning of the Astros' 8-4 come-from-behind win over St. Louis on 4/18 ... pitched the top of the eighth before Houston scored six runs to go ahead in the bottom of the frame ... Worked 1.2 innings at New York's Shea Stadium to earn his second win in a 5-4 victory ... the Astros went ahead with two runs in the top of the eighth inning ... Allowed a run in the ninth inning to lose to Milwaukee, 6-5 ... gave up two hits and a run in the bottom of the ninth to lose to the Mets at New York on 8/23, his second defeat in three outings ... Allowed two runs on 9/4 at Montreal which allowed the Expos to tie the game, 2-2, marking his second blown save of the year ... Allowed one hit and non runs in five innings over five games from 9/6-15 ... Earned his fifth win of the year on 9/7 at Philadelphia after walking in the tying run before retiring the next four batters in an 8-6 Astros win ... Pitched two scoreless innings on 9/24 at Milwaukee to earn his fourth save in a 9-4 come-from-behind win ... In 1996 was recalled from Charlotte on April 5 and finished 2nd on staff in appearances (67)...Strained left intercostal muscle while recording 1st major league victory on April 19 vs. Los Angeles and was on d.l. from April 20-May 10...Earned 1st big league save, May 13 against St. Louis with other save on Sept. 6 vs. Montreal...Was purchased from Portland on Sept. 9, 1995 and made major league debut the following night vs. Atlanta...Did not allow an earned run in 7.1 innings in final 8 games.
