Graduated in 1986 from Urbana (Iowa) Community School...named All-State in baseball and basketball in his junior and senior year...selected by the New York Mets in1986 but did not sign...attended the University of Iowa where he earned preseason All-America honors in 1989...was named Comeback Player of the Year for 2003 by the St. Louis Chapter of the BBWAA...he and his wife, Christi, have five children, C.J., Luke, Emily Ann, Abigail and Hollee.
2004
Ended the season with a 4-2 record and 3.76 ERA, finishing 10 games for the Cardinals. Had 12 holds on the season and was 1-for-3 in save opps.
In roughly the same number of outings and IP, had an ERA that was 3 runs lower after the All-Star break. Was 1-0 in 26 G, 30.2 IP, 5.28 ERA before the break and 3-2 in 26 G, 36.1 IP, 2.21 ERA after.

Worked in relief on 3/31 vs. MIL, his first major league appearance since 2001 when he made two appearances with the Chicago White Sox.
Earned the win 4/8 at COL with 2.0 scoreless IP, his first win since 6/28/00.
Recorded his 1st professional save on 5/15 vs. CIN.
Compiled a 1.85 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 19 appearances (24.1 IP) from 4/8 to 6/10.
He allowed just two runs in his last 11 games (15.0 IP) for a 1.20 ERA & had 16 K's in those 11 games.

Made two starts, both against Cleveland, before missing the rest of the season with an injury to his right elbow...lost first regular season start on 4/4 at CLE, ending a personal eight-game winning streak dating back to the 2000 season...was scratched from his next scheduled start on 4/9 vs. CLE with a sore right trapezoids muscle...left second start on 4/11 vs. CLE after 2.0 IP with pain in his right elbow...was placed on the 15-day DL on 4/12 and did not pitch again for the remainder of the season.
2000
Injuries to his right elbow cut short one of his best major-league seasons... did not pitch from 7/15-9/26 ... left his first start of the second half on 7/14 vs. STL in the fifth inning after experiencing discomfort in his right elbow...injury was later diagnosed as ulnar neuritis...was placed on the 15-day disabled list on 7/17... after rest, appeared in two rehabilitation starts at Class AAA Charlotte...allowed four runs over 2.0 IP in his second rehab start on 9/3 before experiencing pain (diagnosed as a stress fracture below his right elbow)...had a five-inch screw surgically inserted near the elbow on 9/7 by White Sox senior team physician Dr. James Boscardin...threw 5.0 scoreless IP on 9/22 at Tucson in an Instructional League game...returned to make his final start on 9/27 vs. Boston (ND, 1 ER/3.1 IP)...was not included on the ChiSox playoff roster...won his final eight decisions (two shy of career best) over 13 starts dating back to 5/16, compiling a 4.14 ERA (33 ER/71.2 IP)...his 10 wins were four more than his combined total from 1998 and 1999...yielded just 12 home runs in 112.0 IP...limited lefties to a .234 (49-209) average, seventh-best in the American League ...White Sox were 14-6 in his starts, scoring 10 or more runs three times...ranked among the league leaders at the break in winning percentage (T2nd, .833), wins (T4th, 10) and complete games (T7th, two)...was named AL Pitcher of Month for June after going 5-0 with a 3.69 ERA (13 ER/31.2 IP)...it was his second career monthly honor (also Sept. of '92) ... compiled a 14.0 scoreless IP streak from 5/16-26...posted his 19th career complete game and fourth career shutout on 6/22 vs. CLE...helped his cause in a win at CIN on 6/6, going 1-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored...struck out 11 (one shy of his career best) in a complete-game two-hit victory on 4/24 vs. BAL...two-hitter matched his career low and was his first complete game since 5/30/97 vs. CWS... lasted 2.1 IP on 4/18 vs. SEA in an 18-11 victory, his shortest start since 7/26/98 vs. MON (1.0 IP)...made first start in a White Sox uniform on 4/7 at OAK (ND, 4 ER/5.0 IP).
1999
Was limited by injuries to 20 appearances (15 starts) with Milwaukee...began the season on the 15-day disabled list recovering from a small fracture in his right elbow suffered on 7/26/98 vs. MON...combined to go 0-2 with a 6.16 ERA (21 ER/30.2 IP) in six rehabilitation starts at Class AA Huntsville and Class AAA Louisville prior to his reinstatement from the disabled list on 4/20...posted first victory on 5/4 at FLA, going a season-high 8.0 IP without allowing an earned run...lost career-high six straight decisions from 5/11-8/22 ...made first major-league relief appearance on 6/6 at COL...appeared in 13 games before returning to the disabled list on 7/9 with a strained right forearm...returned to the rotation and earned his second win on 9/1 at LA...left start on 9/7 vs. ARI after straining his right pectoralis muscle.
1998
Made his second career Opening Day start...posted 11 no decisions which nearly equaled his career total (14)...compiled a season-best 1.71 ERA (6 ER/31.2 IP) in April...surrendered three home runs to Sammy Sosa on 6/15 at Wrigley Field...was placed on the 15-day disabled list on 7/27 with a small fracture in his right elbow and missed the rest of the season...recorded the first hit by a Brewers pitcher since 8/24/93.
1997
Led team in strikeouts (122) and IP (202.0)...finished two games (34) and three wins (13) shy of his career best...posted his first sub-.500 season in five years ...was just one of two pitchers (Brian Bohanon) in major-league history to record four consecutive .500 seasons...registered a complete-game shutout victory with eight strikeouts on 5/30 at CWS...it was his first complete game since 7/2/94 and first shutout since 9/17/93.
1996
Began the season on the 60-day disabled list while completing a rehabilitation program at Class AAA New Orleans...made quality start in his first appearance on 7/14 vs. Toronto (3 ER/7.0 IP)...earned victory on 7/19 vs. NY, his first win since 4/27/95.
1995
Was 1-1 with a 3.42 ERA in four starts...was placed on the disabled list on 5/19 and missed the remainder of the season after having Tommy John surgery on 6/23...the surgery was performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum.
1994
Tied for the AL lead in games started (25), ranked third in IP (179.0), finished sixth in opponents average (.236) and tied for 10th in wins (11)...led Milwaukee and tied for fourth in the AL with six complete games...pitched four consecutive complete games from 6/17-7/2, the first Brewers pitcher since Bill Wegman in 1991 to accomplish the feat...went 5-1 with a 2.29 ERA and four complete games in June to earn AL Pitcher of the Month honors.
1993
Set career highs in wins (16), IP (258.0), games started (36), complete games (eight) and strikeouts (180)...was named the Brewers Most Valuable Pitcher...became the first Milwaukee pitcher to lead the AL in IP tied for the lead in games started, ranked fifth in complete games and finished seventh in strikeouts ...tied for seventh in the AL in victories...became the fourth-fastest player in major-league history to earn his 20th victory (30th career appearance) on 6/7 vs. Seattle, joining Boo Ferris (1945), Russ Ford (1910) and Nick Maddox (1908)...set Brewers strikeout record for a right-handed pitcher, which also ranked as the fourth-highest total in club history among all pitchers... tied club record of 32 decisions in a season set by Jim Colborn in 1973 (20-12)...went a career-high 10.0 IP on 8/20 at California.
1992
Was named AL Rookie Pitcher of the Year by The Sporting News...posted an 11-2 record with a 1.79 ERA...set club record with a .846 winning percentage, surpassing Moose Haas (.813 in 1983)...tied club record with 10-straight win from 8/8 to 9/29...limited opponents to a .207 BA, best among AL starting pitchers...was named AL Pitcher of the Month for September after going 5-0 with a 1.17 ERA and two complete games....struck out a career-high 12 batters in his first complete game win on 9/13 at BAL...recorded his first ML shutout on 9/23 vs. CAL...was recalled from Denver on 7/15.
