LOS ANGELES -- Outfielder Yasiel Puig's appeal for a two-game suspension was denied, and he will serve it during the Dodgers' games against the Mets on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Puig was suspended and fined an undisclosed amount for fighting and inciting a benches-clearing incident in the Dodgers' game with the Giants on Aug. 14. San Francisco catcher Nick Hundley received an undisclosed fine for his role in the incident.
In the seventh inning of the Dodgers' 2-1 loss to the Giants, Puig expressed frustration after fouling off a Tony Watson pitch, and he and Hundley proceeded to exchange heated words. The situation escalated quickly as Puig pushed Hundley, prompting members of both teams to spill out of their dugouts and sprint toward home plate.
Both players were ejected from the game.
Puig was originally scheduled to begin serving the suspension on Aug. 17 in Seattle, but it was held in abeyance until the appeal was resolved.
Because the suspension is being served after rosters have expanded, the Dodgers won't be shorthanded, as they are able to choose from outfielders Matt Kemp, Joc Pederson, Alvin Toles, Enrique Hernandez, Tim Locastro, Alex Verdugo and Chris Taylor to fill in for Puig.
Puig is batting .259 this season, with a .769 OPS, 15 homers and 47 RBIs.
