Maeda exits with right hip strain; DL stint likely
LOS ANGELES -- With three Dodgers starting pitchers already on the disabled list, the Dodgers expect Kenta Maeda to join them after his removal from Tuesday night's 6-1 loss to the Phillies in the second inning with a right hip strain.
Manager Dave Roberts speculated that Maeda will need to miss at least one start and will go on the disabled list. Maeda was to have an MRI on Wednesday to determine the extent of the injury.
"It looks like a potential DL situation," said Roberts. "Nothing too severe, but enough to potentially miss a start. We'll get verification once the scan comes back."
Maeda said his hip began bothering him late in his previous start on Wednesday, when he struck out 12 in 6 2/3 innings. He said it improved in the following days, enabling him to throw a Saturday bullpen session, but it flared up again and quickly worsened against the Phillies.
"It was feeling pretty good until I started pitching in this game," Maeda said. "It was considerably better between outings and wasn't much of a concern. When I began pitching in the game, it gradually became more and more."
After enduring a 24-pitch scoreless first inning, he allowed a home run to Nick Williams leading off the second inning to snap his streak of 15 2/3 scoreless innings. After getting Scott Kingery on a flyout to left field, Maeda allowed a double to left by Jorge Alfaro.
At that point, manager Dave Roberts and a trainer went to the mound, but Maeda convinced them he was fine to continue.
"I made the decision that I was able to pitch today and getting pulled out early is something I don't want to do and it puts a lot of pressure on the team," Maeda said, explaining why he lobbied to remain on the mound.
Maeda struck out opposing pitcher Jacob Arrieta looking, but Roberts said Maeda's body language told him it was time to make a change.
"I appreciate and applaud the desire, but risk versus reward," said Roberts. "You see him grabbing at it and moving, so there's a lot of uncertainty there."
"For me personally, I do not think I will be out a long time, but at the same time I do have to see what the MRI says," Maeda said. "The fact that most of the starting pitchers are hurt, it's something you don't want to happen, and I don't want to be part of that, but we'll see."
Maeda explained that the discomfort bothered him pushing off the rubber, resulting in diminished velocity on his fastball.
Already on the disabled list for the Dodgers are starters Clayton Kershaw, Rich Hill and Hyun-Jin Ryu. Kershaw, out with biceps tendinitis, is scheduled to return to start Thursday's game. Hill is out until June with a finger blister and Ryu likely won't be back until the All-Star break with a groin strain.
The healthiest starter, Alex Wood, has been dealing with hamstring cramps that have forced him out of two of his last four starts.
