Postgame tests on the left elbow of Dodgers reliever Caleb Ferguson were inconclusive and he will return to Los Angeles for an MRI on Wednesday.

Ferguson was injured striking out the Padres' Jurickson Profar on a foul tip leading off the bottom of the eighth inning in San Diego on Tuesday night. Ferguson grimaced as he released the strikeout pitch, a fastball three mph slower than the previous one. He walked off the mound, motioned toward the dugout and left the field.

“Right now, nothing is conclusive,” said manager Dave Roberts. “Right now, we’re going to remain in that hopeful state.”

Ferguson is 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA in 21 appearances. He was replaced by Blake Treinen, who retired the next two batters.

Ferguson, who had Tommy John surgery as a high school senior in 2014, had X-rays and an ultrasound at Petco Park after coming out of the game. Roberts said it wasn’t a foregone conclusion that Ferguson would go on the injured list.

Coincidentally, reliever Joe Kelly finished serving his five-game suspension on Tuesday and will be active for the Wednesday series finale.
