Move over Yoenis Cespedes, Yoan Moncada has a few tricked-out cars of his own
One day, Yoan Moncada is playing in his first Grapefruit League game for the Red Sox and wowing fans and teammates alike with his athleticism. The next day, the 20-year-old is playing with his three new sports cars in his hotel parking lot.
It has been quite a whirlwind for Moncada since defecting from Cuba and signing with the Red Sox a year ago. The fun continued on Thursday when his new fleet of vehicles arrived.
Remember Alex Vega of the Auto Firm in Miami who delivered a week's load of fancy cars to Yoenis Cespedes at Mets camp a couple of weeks ago? Yes, we think you probably remember.
That was the same Vega who delivered a couple of shiny new toys to Moncada -- ranked No. 7 among prospects by MLB Pipeline -- on Thursday.
A couple of weeks ago, Moncada received his black BMW I8 that has the doors that stand straight up, not to mention the glow-in-the-dark orange stripes. The vehicle also includes a widebody kit to make the car eight inches wider and is painted with a white, black and red theme, while hoisting a new front bumper, hood, rear bumper, exhaust and custom-made Avorza.
But honestly, what fun is one car? Vega brought him a gorgeous white Lamborgini (Lambo HWA) that has painted front and rear bumpers with black and metallic red accents, all sitting on a new set of custom-made Avorza forged wheels. The infielder also has a BMW X6M widebody to expand his collection.
Oh, and most importantly, all car logos have been replaced with a "YM" for Yoan Moncada.
At this point, Moncada likes the I8 the best. But give him a few days to think it over.
As some Minor League teammates looked on, Moncada had some fun cruising through the hotel parking lot on Thursday. He smiled for effect with each "vroom, vroom".
"The way I do my job, to me, is an art, whether it's a regular person or a ballplayer," said Vega. "I treat these guys right. And I make sure they don't over-do what they want to do. Sometimes they want to outdo each other. I tell them, 'calm down, let's make it different.'"
Vega's work at Red Sox camp isn't done. On Monday, he will deliver state-of-the-art rides to Hanley Ramirez, Pablo Sandoval, Rusney Castillo and Brock Holt.
