Wladimir Balentien tied Japan's single-season home run record (UPDATE: He broke it)

UPDATE, 9/15: The record held by Oh, Rhodes and Cabrera has officially been eclipsed. Balentien cracked No. 56 (and No. 57 for good measure) in Yakult's 9-0 win Sunday over the Hanshin Tigers.

On Wednesday night (or early Wednesday morning, for those of us in the continental U.S.), Wladimir Balentien hit his 55th home run of 2013 for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, tying the Japanese single-season record set by Sadaharu Oh in 1964.

Previously of the Mariners and Reds, Balentien became a Swallow in 2011. Former Major Leaguers Tuffy Rhodes and Alex Cabrera reached the 55-homer mark in 2001 and '02, but Wlad is poised to become the first player to beat it.
