A Division III team avoided a loss thanks to a miraculous wild pitch carom

The Cubs experienced a dash of luck in a tight situation against the Cardinals in their season opener on Sunday night. Trailing 1-0 in the sixth inning with Yadier Molina on third, reliever Carl Edwards Jr. threw a wild pitch. However, the ball rebounded off the Busch Stadium backstop, forcing Molina to retreat back to the bag. Edwards escaped the inning unscathed shortly therafter when Carlos Martínez bounced into a double play.
The Cubs' fortune does not compare to the miracle that Texas Lutheran University experienced in the first game of a Division III doubleheader against Schreiner University on Saturday afternoon. TLU pitcher Jacob Wieder experienced a bout of wildness on the verge of blowing a 9-5 lead in the ninth inning to Schreiner. Schreiner had rallied to make it a 9-7 game, and a wild pitch by Wieder made it 9-8. 
Wieder promptly uncorked another wild one, and yet was improbably bailed out by the baseball gods for the second out of the inning.

The ball bounced away from catcher Cameron Wilson, but somehow caromed directly to Wieder. He alertly covered the plate, and tagged Schreiner's Josh Gilliam running home for the rare unassisted pitcher putout. It was either heads-up baseball or an extremely elaborate and wacky plan that somehow paid off. Chances are that it was the former.
Wieder was later able to retire Osman Quintana on a fly ball to right field to end the game, allowing TLU to squeak out the 9-8 victory.
