Six years after the 7-player Yankees-Tigers-D-backs trade, here's where everyone ended up

6 years later: The 7-man Yankees-Tigers-D-backs trade

Six years ago, in the heat of the 2009 Winter Meetings, the Yankees, Tigers and D-backs shuffled seven players across a three-team trade that resulted in four future All-Star appearances and a Cy Young Award. Two years after the swap, all three teams made the postseason and the trade was seen more or less as beneficial for all involved.

Four years after that, though, no player in the trade remains with the team he was dealt to -- which means, more than half a decade later, it's the perfect time to check in with everyone.

To recap the original trade ...

The Yankees received:

Curtis Granderson from the Tigers

The Tigers received:

Phil Coke and Austin Jackson from the Yankees

Max Scherzer and Daniel Schlereth from the D-backs

The D-backs received:

Edwin Jackson from the Tigers

Ian Kennedy from the Yankees

Where are they now?

Let's start with Granderson. He spent four seasons with the Yankees and accumulated a total 14.3 WAR. He signed with the Mets before the 2014 season, and hit .259/.364/.457 with 26 HRs and 33 doubles as leadoff man for the NL pennant winners in 2015.

Jackson finished second in AL Rookie of the Year voting following his first season in Detroit and had 20.7 WAR over 4.5 years with the Tigers. Ultimately, he was traded as part of another three-teamer that brought David Price to Detroit. In 2015, with the Mariners and Cubs, Jackson hit .267/.311/.385 with nine HRs and 25 doubles. Current status: Free agent.

Coke stayed with the Tigers for a full five seasons as both a starter and reliever, good for 1.0 total WAR. He pitched 12 2/3 innings for the Cubs and Blue Jays in 2015, posting a 5.68 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 8.5 strikeouts per nine innings, and then signed with the A's to pitch in the Minors before he was released in August.

And now, the player who became the piéce de résistance of this deal. Scherzer was worth 21.5 WAR over five seasons in Detroit, and earned himself that Cy Young Award in 2013. If you need a refresher of Scherzer's 2015, he had a 2.79 ERA, .918 WHIP and 10.9 strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio over 228 2/3 innings for the Nationals. But we'll mostly remember all the no-hitter chocolate sauce

In three seasons with the Tigers, bouncing between MLB and Triple-A, Schlereth accumulated 0.2 total WAR. He spent the beginning of 2015 in the Cubs organization, but was released in June.

Edwin Jackson was in Arizona for half of a season -- where he had a 0.1 WAR and threw a no-hitter -- before he was traded for the fourth of six times in his career (the most among active Major Leaguers). Two trades and a few free agency signings later, Jackson pitched a total of 55 2/3 innings for the Cubs and Braves in 2015, with a 3.07 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 6.5 strikeouts per nine innings. Current status: free agent.

Kennedy had 8.5 WAR in 3.5 seasons with the D-backs. In 2015 with the Padres, he had a 4.28 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings over 168 1/3 innings. Current status: free agent, and he'll likely sign a multi-year deal this offseason.
