Sunday is Jackie Robinson Day and here's how players are celebrating
On Sunday, Major League Baseball will celebrate Jackie Robinson Day. While the most visible tribute will come in the form of the No. 42 displayed on the back of every game jersey for Sunday's games, teams will also honor the legacy of Robinson with a commemorative patch on caps and jersey sleeves. And, there will also be socks -- yes socks! -- with the No. 42 on them.
Those displays of group solidarity are nice, but each player has been impacted by Robinson's contributions to the game in a different way. Players took to social media Sunday to pay tribute to Robinson and reflect on what his legacy means to them individually:
#JackieRobinson provided athletes like myself, @LewisBrinson and so many others the opportunity to play the game we love. I’ll forever use my platform to pay that forward. Thank you #Jackie - this ones for you! #MaybinMission #42 pic.twitter.com/8fTapwe1Xh

Other players, both current and former, joined in celebration of Jackie Robinson Day:

Playing in the big leagues provided so many eye opening experiences. But none were so uniquely special as playing a ball game with #42 on my back, and appreciating all that it stood for. #JackieRobinsonDay pic.twitter.com/OOmo3Yb2qE

Honor, privilege, and inspiration are just a few words that come to my mind when I see this #42 in my locker. Going to school in a HBCU, getting drafted by the team that allowed Jackie to break the color barrier and now being able to wear his number with @RaysBaseball is surreal! pic.twitter.com/a7MTWlLoBu

71 years ago you paved the way. Because of you, I can do what I love. Because of you, our kids can do what they love. Thank you, Jackie. #JackieRobinsonDay #Jackie42 pic.twitter.com/YOaeadD2Nr
