Photo of the Day: Citi Field transformed into a hockey venue for the Winter Classic
Although the 2018 season doesn't start for nearly three months with a full slate for Opening Day on March 29, Citi Field's 2018 got underway on New Year's Day. That's because the Buffalo Sabres hosed the New York Rangers for NHL's annual Winter Classic at Citi Field this year.
Despite not being a hockey arena, Citi Field did it up right:
That's right: In addition to putting a hockey rink on the field, they put taxi cabs and highway signs in the outfield to put even more New York character into the outdoor hockey game in New York City between two New York teams.
Even though the schedule called or a hockey game, something about Citi Field called for a game of catch:

It won't be long until there's more where that came from.
The Rangers wound up beating the Sabres, 3-2, in overtime, making this Winter Classic definitely live up to its name.
