Photo of the Day: Dodgers become first big league team to own plane
On this day, 57 years ago, the Brooklyn Dodgers became the first Major League team to purchase its own airplane.
From 1949-57, the team used a 20-seat DC-3 that owner Walter O'Malley received from Dodgertown advocate Bud Holman. Holman apparently won the plane playing craps. But alas, 20 seats proved too small for a big league club, and on January 4, 1957, O'Malley bought the 44-seat craft you see above. You know, the one with Roy Campanella, Pee Wee Reese, Gil Hodges and Sandy Koufax in it.
