A Giants Minor Leaguer needed just 85 pitches to toss a perfect game
Back in 2012, writer Jason Lukehart introduced a new statistic into the baseball lexicon: The Maddux, or any shutout thrown in fewer than 100 pitches.
It's a very impressive (and very rare) feat. But, after Tuesday night, we might need to create one more: The Mazza, as in Giants farmhand and Augusta GreenJackets pitcher Domenic Mazza, who tossed a perfect game against the Lexington Legends in just 85 pitches.
As you might imagine, the former 22nd round pick in the 2015 Draft was the definition of efficient: He didn't throw more than 14 pitches in any single inning, and he induced eight groundouts to go with nine punchouts. Of course, even the most remarkable perfect games still require some defensive wizardry, and this one was no exception -- courtesy of a diving catch by right fielder Sandro Fabian in the eighth:
That bullet dodged, Mazza cruised to the finish line, getting a flyout to center to seal the deal -- and get a big dogpile from his teammates:
The way this Minor League season is unfolding, we can expect the next perfect game in about a day or so.
