Meet your newest Twitter celebrity: Allen Craig's tortoise

Allen Craig never thought the pet tortoise that he and his fiancé Marie have owned for five years would cause such a big commotion.

But the Cardinals outfielder was quite wrong. Torty the tortoise suddenly has a Twitter account (with almost 7,000 followers) and has been Tweeting Cardinals-related items for at least a week, to the best of Craig's knowledge.

"Honestly I have no idea who it is," he said. "I don't even know where to start."

On Friday, Kyle Lohse talked about keeping Torty safe while the team is in Philadelphia and David Freese said he had enough of discussing a pet turtle that belonged to someone else.

And while there is suspicion that the Tweets could be coming from the inside, the identity remains a secret.

"I thought it was a little weird at first that someone had a Twitter account about my pet tortoise," Craig said. "I don't really think it's a big deal, but I started reading the tweets and they're pretty funny. And everyone kind of went with it."

Today, @TortyCraig fired off a handful of Tweets, including one notable reference to the arm of catcher Yadier Molina, who until this season was among the best in the game at throwing out base-stealers: "My guess as to the meaning of Yadi's neck tattoos is that they are the symbols from an ancient civilization for "Caught Stealing.""

While fans are selling T-shirts in Torty's honor - which the Cardinals' outfielder is aware of - the pet tortoise's sudden boost to stardom might have been the good luck charm the Cardinals needed over this last month.

"I guess you could say that," Craig said. "It wasn't really a huge deal in the clubhouse. It kind of just got out and now it's a huge deal. But it's fun and whatever it takes to keep the team close is fine with me."
