Long-lost footage shows FDR walking at the 1937 All-Star Game

VIDEO: FDR walks at 1937 ASG

Major League Baseball's 1937 All-Star Game featured a Lou Gehrig homer, four hits by Joe Medwick and a broken toe for Dizzy Dean that would eventually cut his Hall of Fame career short. But the game might be most notable for what happened before the actual game: President Franklin Delano Roosevelt threw out the first pitch and walked to his seat in the stands.

FDR, whose lower body was ravaged by polio, had requested that the press not photograph or film him walking, maneuvering, or getting in or out of his car. Most complied, and the Secret Service was tasked with interfering with those that didn't. Still, Washington Senators pitcher Jimmie DeShong managed to capture the President's impressive trek up the stands before the start of the contest. The video, which was shot on an 8 mm home movie camera, is only the second known clip of its kind in existence.
