Who are the most popular MLB stars among Little League World Series players?
The LLWS players pick their favorite MLB stars
Texas takes on Pennsylvania in the United States Championship, broadcast on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
By the end of the Little League World Series on Sunday, we'll all have picked out our favorite young players. Think Mo'ne Davis in 2014, or the pitcher this year who was just as amped about giving up a grand slam as the kid who hit it. Actually, if we're being honest, there are too many to pick a favorite.
But who do the Little Leaguers name as their favorite baseball players? Which Major Leaguers are most popular among the talent in Williamsport? Well, when the kids were asked to decide, a venerable few loom large.
The Little Leaguers' favorite MLB players is ... DRUM ROLL ... MIKE TROUT.
The reigning American League MVP is indeed the most popular player, with 12 votes among 173 answers from the Little Leaguers at Williamsport this year, though he edges the retired Derek Jeter by just a single vote. Bryce Harper and Dustin Pedroia are tied for third with eight votes each, with Andrew McCutchen's seven rounding out the top five.
A trio of Clayton Kershaw, Troy Tulowitzki and Miguel Cabrera are tied as the next most popular players, while Albert Pujols, Manny Machado, Robinson Cano and Yasiel Puig make for an esteemed top 12.
A few fun factoids about the rest of the field:
With seven, the Blue Jays have the most players named as favorites among the LLWS: The aforementioned Tulowitzki, Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista, Russell Martin, Justin Smoak, David Price and Maicer Izturis. Tulowitzki, Donaldson, Martin and Smoak were all favorites of the Canada LL team, while Price was a favorite of the Japan team and Bautista was a favorite of players on the California and Oregon teams. Venezuela native Izturis was named by a player on the team from his home country.
The Orioles' five named players are the second-most, and the Cardinals, Dodgers, Giants, Reds and Royals all have four players named as Little Leaguers' favorites.
The AL East boasts the most names, with 17 players. Twelve players from the NL West are LL favorites, along with 10 from the NL Central.
Along with Jeter, nine other retired players were named as favorites: 2015 Hall of Fame Inductee Craig Biggio, Lance Berkman, Bo Jackson, Josh Gibson, Chipper Jones, Jackie Robinson, Manny Ramirez, Nolan Ryan and Fernando Valenzuela.
Among active MLBers, however, the favorites tend to be younger. Nearly 60 percent of the selected favorites are younger than 30 years old, and two of the top five -- Trout and Harper -- are younger than 25.
