Tigers' deal with Justin Upton gives them one of the scariest lineups in baseball
If the Royals were expecting an easy victory lap around the AL Central next season, content to bask in the glow of a World Series title, it's not going to happen. Because a source tells MLB.com the Tigers have agreed with free-agent slugger Justin Upton on a six-year, $132.75 million deal as they tool up and look to avenge the end of their streak of four consecutive AL Central division titles.
Upton's signing doesn't just give the Tigers a new left fielder, allowing them the option of platooning Anthony Gose and Cameron Maybin in center field, it also gives them one of the strongest lineups in baseball. On any given day, the team's 3-through-6 spots in the order will likely look like this:
Thanks to our patent-pending MLB Pitcher Goggles, here's what it would actually look like to stand on the mound and face them:
That's right, the middle of the Tigers' order is going to feature a group of batters in Miguel Cabrera, Upton, Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez that combined for 88 home runs last year -- including a down year from Cabrera (if winning a batting title and leading the league in OBP can be considered a "down year") and Victor Martinez playing in only 120 games as he returned from leg injuries.
It's basically going to be Hercules' 12 Labors combined with Nickelodeon's GUTS Aggro Crag that pitchers will have to scale four times per game in hopes of winning a ballgame. Fastballs will be crushed, hanging breaking balls tortured and even good pitches on the corners will be spoiled foul, just begging you to try to do that again.
Of course, Upton isn't the only acquisiton the Tigers made. They brought back Maybin to patrol center, added Jordan Zimmermann to bolster the rotation/take revenge on the Nationals for signing Max Scherzer and closed up the hole in the back of the bullpen by bringing in changeup specialist Francisco Rodriguez.
But it's not just the Tigers that are a terrifying sight. While the Royals are defending a World Series title, the White Sox traded for Todd Frazier and have the human Gumby, Chris Sale, leading the rotation; the Twins will have full seasons of Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton to look forward to; and the Indians are led by Corey Kluber, Michael Brantley and rookie sensation Francisco Lindor.
Basically, the winner of the 2016 AL Central is going to emerge with more physical and emotional scars than Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Revenant." For us viewing at home, it's going to be a lot of fun.
