Jose Fernandez would appreciate it if Evan Longoria didn't hit his homers quite so far

Jose Fernandez had a request after Evan Longoria's HR

The Rays handed Jose Fernandez his first loss of the season, topping the Marlins, 4-1, on Thursday night. It began when Evan Longoria sent a solo shot high and deep to left field in the first inning, just the fourth homer off of Fernandez this year.

Unaccustomed to allowing such brazen displays of power, Fernandez assumed it had been a mistake. You see, people don't typically hit his pitches quite so far. He told Longoria as much:

"You don't have to hit it that far," he called from the dugout. Good, all cleared up then. Longoria must not have known he could hit the ball a shorter distance, within the grasp of the Marlins' trio of outfielders. That's why he hit a home run -- he thought he didn't have a choice.

Err, right. As long as we're all on the same page.
