Joe Maddon's 83-year-old mom made the journey to Game 3 in the back of a police car
Joe Maddon is many things. The Cubs' motivational manager is a master of doing the unpredictable during games, and even cited Steve Carell's goofy-but-well-intentioned Michael Scott from "The Office" as an influence.
Before Saturday's World Series Game 4 showdown with the Indians at Wrigley Field (7:30 p.m. ET air time | 8 ET game time on FOX), Maddon again shared a rather unique story about his 83-year-old mother, Albina, and the travel adventure she underwent just to get to Wrigley on time for Game 3 on Friday.
You see, Albina, who goes by the nickname "Beanie," had to go from Hazleton, Pa., to the heart of Wrigleyville, and her journey was full of delayed flights and traffic, ultimately ending with a police car ride from the Chicago P.D.
That police ride, by the way, led to an amusing scenario as Maddon explained the officers had to assure her that no, she wasn't being arrested:
"So we contacted the police, and they threw her in the back of the car. First of all they had to tell her she's not being arrested. Yeah, right, Beanie, being from Hazleton, Polish Catholic, she would have imagined the worst first; they always do.
So she was there. The cop assured her. My niece and nephew, Michael and Christine, were also part of the party. So I guess they threw them in the back there and just rushed them on in, and got her up to the will call window, escorted her in. And they got there by the second inning."
Maddon's takeaway from his mother's travails? Pretty succinct:
"Those tough Polish ladies, man. I grew up with them. They're awesome. They can really clean, they can cook, and she's the best mom ever."
