Joe Kelly struck out Matt Kemp on an absolutely filthy changeup
Red Sox reliever Joe Kelly pitched a scoreless sixth inning with two strikeouts in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday. That success was built on a foundation of a fastball that sat in the upper 90s and even touched 100 mph. But, as is often said, a 100-mph fastball alone isn't enough to dominate Major League hitters.
Enter Kelly's changeup. The one he threw to strike out Matt Kemp started out looking normal enough ... until it suddenly took a sharp right turn halfway to home plate:
That wasn't a gust of wind whipping through Fenway, it was just the movement on the pitch. How one is supposed to hit a pitch like that while also preparing for a fastball that pushes triple digits is a mystery ... one that Kemp wasn't able to crack.
