Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Miguel Cabrera watched a foul vanish in the Tropicana Field roof
In the bottom of the third inning of the Tigers' 10-7 win over the Rays on Friday, Logan Morrison popped up a foul high into the upper reaches of the Tropicana Field roof.
It seemed to stay in play, and Tigers catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia leapt up to track it down, hoping to make the third and final out of the inning. But, as can occasionally happen in the Trop, the ball flew over the B-ring catwalk and vanished from sight. Staring up into the lights, Salty was lost.
So, being a good teammate, Miguel Cabrera ran over from first base to help him ...
And he couldn't see it either.
If you look closely, the first-base umpire and Rays first-base coach are in the background, also clearly perplexed at how a solid object like a baseball could seemingly dematerialize into nothingness right before their eyes. You can't blame Cabrera and Salty for trying.
And sure, Logan Morrison ended up walking and the Rays scored four runs with two outs that inning to go up, 5-0, but it was no big deal. As mentioned earlier, the Tigers ultimately prevailed after scoring eight runs in the ninth.
