Listen to David Ortiz's moving speech to the AL clubhouse before his last All-Star Game
Over the course of his iconic career, David Ortiz has made the All-Star Game his second home -- he's made 10 All-Star teams in the last 13 years, providing revolutionary fashion sense and monster dingers every step of the way.
Alas, all good things must eventually retire, and despite putting together arguably the best season of his career, Papi is making his final appearance in the Midsummer Classic. We know, we know, we haven't gotten past the denial stage either, but it's true. Luckily for grieving baseball fans everywhere, the AL squad gave Ortiz a chance to say goodbye his way: with an emotional pregame clubhouse speech.
Every bit of it is vintage Papi:
- Expressing heartfelt appreciation for his wonderful career: "It's been an unbelievable ride."
- Calling on the generation of stars behind him to carry the torch and set an example: "Those days when your mind says you can't go, you say, 'Yes I can.'"
- And, of course, paying it forward: "The one thing that I really appreciate about the game is going out of my way to say something to the younger players for them to make the game better. When I go to sleep I appreciate that more than a home run or a walk-off."
