Randy Johnson got a Phoenix street renamed after him because the city can't honor him enough
On Thursday, Randy Johnson received an honor that only the most cherished among us get: his very own street. Phoenix now has a "Randy Johnson Way" outside of Chase Field, and it is just the next step in a process that will likely end with the state of Arizona's name becoming "Big Unit-a." Here's the Hall of Famer on his eponymous roadway:
"This is something here in Arizona that just hasn't stopped since the moment I retired … the [Hall of Fame] induction, then the number retirement, then getting the key to the city, and then having the street named after me. And I was very honored and very privileged and very humbled."
Johnson is slowly taking over. Listening to him tick off his honors, it becomes clear: From Chase Field to the city of Phoenix, to the entire state of Arizona, soon Johnson's presence will be felt everywhere. Not that that's bad a thing -- why wouldn't you honor a five-time Cy Young Award winner who recorded 4,875 strikeouts as much as you could?
As for that street, well, according to D-backs president Derrick Hall, America is getting its own autobahn:
"We're going to lobby you to make sure the speed limit here is somewhere between 97 and 100 mph on RJ Way."
That's pretty fast.
