Celebrate Marquis Grissom's birthday with his walk-off steal of home in the '97 ALCS

Happy 48th birthday to Marquis Grissom

A very happy birthday to former All-Star and Gold Glove winner Marquis Grissom, who turns 48 today. In celebration of his 48th journey around the sun, we decided to revisit one of the best -- and downright weirdest -- moments from Grissom's 17-year career.

It was Game 3 of the 1997 ALCS, and Grissom's Indians were tied with the Baltimore Orioles at one win apiece as the series shifted to Cleveland. The game came down to the bottom of ninth, score tied at 1, with Grissom on third and Omar Vizquel at the plate. Indians manager Mike Hargrove decided to call for a suicide squeeze for the win, and it went...um...well, we guess:

Not exactly a Tom Emanski instructional video, but hey, the Indians went on to win the series, reaching their second Fall Classic in three years.

Grissom had a very solid career in his own right. He first broke through as a leadoff man with the Montreal Expos in the early 90s, making the All-Star Game in 1993 and '94, and slashed a career .272/.318/.415 with 227 home runs. He also managed the remarkably rare walk-off inside-the-park home run, which just might be the most suspenseful play in baseball:

So happy birthday, Marquis, and may you continue to cause defensive miscues wherever life takes you.
