Listen to Vin Scully narrate the start of the Dodgers season and pass the torch
In 2017, a voice other than Vin Scully's will provide narration for Dodgers baseball for the first time in 67 years. We thought we may have heard the last of Scully's soothing, poetic accompaniment to the sport in October.
Luckily, that was not the case. The Dodgers brought a welcome surprise to the crowd gathered at Dodger Stadium on Opening Day. Scully would have the first words of the 2017 Dodgers season with a pre-recorded video that opened the pregame festivities. Fans were not only treated to a final taste of Scully, but also to a more formal passing of the torch to the narrator of the next generation of Dodger memories.
The video features Scully at his finest: Mere seconds after quoting a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, he's sharing baseball stories about Wally Moon in the 1950s. It's a video about the Dodgers, so of course he talks about the start of Tommy Lasorda's first full season as manager. But, this is Vin Scully, so we get the technicolor version of the story, which involves Frank Sinatra singing the national anthem.
Yet, all good things must come to an end -- yes, including Vin Scully soliloquies. The video concludes with Scully introducing Joe Davis, his replacement in the Dodgers broadcast booth. May his career be as long and celebrated as his predecessor's.
