A wild pitch was just the beginning of Brandon Finnegan's hijinks-filled first inning
Early on in Saturday's matchup against the Padres, Brandon Finnegan apparently tried a new strategy. Right away in the first inning, he attempted to rid himself of any and all bad vibes that might strike on the mound -- including wild pitches, missed catches or really any play that might fall under the "blooper" category. Get 'em all out of the way early, you know?
And, well, he had himself quite a time.
In the span of a couple of batters, Finnegan sent a pitch sailing to the backstop on a late-time call, then took a baseball to the shoulder when he wasn't looking for the umpire's throw back to the mound, all with a runner on second. After the whole ordeal, he looked up, shook his fists toward the heavens, and shouted, "WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"
OK, that last part didn't happen, but it still constitutes a blooper-palooza. He talked about missing the ump's throw with MLB.com's Mark Sheldon after the game:
"I wish I would have paid attention, I wasn't looking. But, you know -- there's nothing I can do about it. It didn't hit me hard enough, so."
Alas, despite pitching a solid 6 2/3 innings while allowing three runs and striking out eight, Finnegan took the loss as the Reds fell to the Padres, 3-0. Maybe next game he'll add in a slip off the mound.
